Jason Momoa is starring in a very popular new show on Prime Video, and it’s arriving at a significant moment in his career, as it potentially concludes his involvement with a major film series. Known for his charm and impressive physicality, Momoa is a natural fit for leading roles in action-packed franchises.
Jason Momoa has been in a lot of popular movies and TV shows, including franchises like Fast & Furious, Dune, Baywatch, Minecraft, Game of Thrones, and DC. He’s finished with some of these roles, but is just beginning others. Soon, he’ll be concluding his work on a major film in one of the most beloved science fiction series ever made.
Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune: Part Three will feature Jason Momoa in a new role: Hayt, a clone of his previously deceased character, Duncan Idaho. Though Dune promises to be a significant franchise for Momoa, he’s best known for his theatrical success as Aquaman in the now-concluded DC Extended Universe, which is surprisingly being revived.
Despite not performing well in theaters when it was released on December 22, 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – Jason Momoa’s last film as the character – is now gaining popularity on streaming services. While the movie earned $440.2 million at the box office with a $205 million budget, it needed to make between $410 and $512.5 million to be considered profitable. Now, the Aquaman sequel is finding success with viewers at home.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Has Become A Streaming Hit 3 Years Later
Just over two years after its theatrical release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom became available to stream on Prime Video in the US on May 27th. The DC film quickly became popular, reaching the 8th most-watched movie on Prime Video within a day. As of June 1st, it’s now ranked 10th, but remains in the top 10 movies on the streaming service in the United States.
Prime Video’s list of most-watched movies in the US includes Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom alongside several other popular titles. Topping the chart is the original movie Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, bringing back John Krasinski as Jack Ryan after his successful TV series. Other films currently featured include the animated favorite Despicable Me 4, the romance Regretting You, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics (a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is performing well with audiences, who give it a strong 79% rating.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Marks The End Of An Era For DC At The Perfect Time
The arrival of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on streaming is well-timed for both Jason Momoa and DC. The film served as the last release of the previous DC movie universe, which concluded in 2023, while James Gunn’s Creature Commandos animated series kicks off the new DC Universe in December 2024. Now, years after its theatrical release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is gaining popularity on Prime Video in the US, coinciding with Momoa’s return to DC—but this time, he’s trading in Aquaman for the role of Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie.
The Supergirl movie, starring Milly Alcock, will be in theaters on June 26th. With less than a month until its release, the recent streaming success of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is actually building excitement for Supergirl. Many viewers are enjoying Jason Momoa’s final performance as Aquaman and are now eager to see what he does next, which perfectly sets the stage for his upcoming, action-packed role as Lobo and boosts anticipation for Supergirl.
