Doug Aitken’s immersive art is taking over New York City this summer. His large-scale cinematic installation, Lightscape, will be on display at The Shed, filling a massive 12,000-square-foot gallery space. It’s an experience that truly feels like stepping into Aitken’s unique artistic vision.

I was completely blown away by this – it’s so much more than just a movie! They’re calling it a hopeful, powerful story about how we’re all connected, and it’s amazing because it mixes film with incredible architecture, music, and live performances. It feels like a constantly evolving, ‘living’ experience spread across seven different screens – truly something special.

This work captures the energy of Southern California while exploring the messy process of finding yourself. It offers a realistic and moving portrayal of this search, using the California landscape as its backdrop. The story follows characters – including those played by Beck and Natasha Lyonne – as they navigate constantly changing settings, from stark mountains and vast deserts to futuristic, high-tech spaces.

Okay, so the music in Lightscape is a HUGE part of what makes it amazing. They actually worked with the LA Philharmonic and a choir to create it! You’ll hear original stuff from artists like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Beck, and even the creator of Lightscape himself. It’s not just one style either – it goes from really peaceful, almost lullaby-like sounds to some seriously intense tracks. It totally adds to the whole experience.

According to Alex Poots, the artistic director of The Shed, Lightscape is a powerful depiction of the United States, and a unique piece of art that encourages reflection on our identity and history, especially now during a period of significant change.

From June 25th to September 13th, you can experience Lightscape in New York City. The installation will come alive with live musical performances throughout its run. Visit The Shed’s website to learn more.
