Jane Fonda takes a nasty swipe at Barbra Streisand over her Robert Redford tribute as new Hollywood feud is born

It just goes to show a Hollywood feud can pop up no matter what age you are.

On Oscar Sunday, a fresh feud was born between octogenarian icons Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand.

And it was over a late A-list actor: Robert Redford.

Honestly, I was really surprised to hear that Barbra Streisand was chosen to honor Robert Redford at the Oscars. I know Jane Fonda, who’s 88, wasn’t thrilled about it either, especially considering Redford passed away last year at 89. It just seemed like Jane, with her close history with him, would have been a more fitting choice, and she was reportedly unhappy about being overlooked.

Jane Fonda believes she should have been the one acting alongside the film legend, as she appeared in four movies with him – including ‘Tall Story,’ ‘The Chase,’ ‘Barefoot in the Park,’ and ‘The Electric Horseman.’ Barbra Streisand, on the other hand, only starred with him in one film, ‘The Way We Were’ from 1973, Fonda explained to Entertainment Tonight.

Fonda expressed confusion about Barbra Streisand’s appearance at an event honoring Robert Redford, saying, ‘She only worked on one film with him, but I starred in four!’

Fonda admitted she still has a lot of affection for Robert Redford, sharing that she’d always been in love with him. She described him as incredibly handsome and a man of strong principles, and praised his contributions to the film industry, particularly his support of independent films.

During the awards show, Barbra Streisand paid tribute to Robert Redford with a speech and a song as part of the segment honoring those we’ve lost.

Redford died in September at age 89.

She remembered that after reading the first draft of ‘The Way We Were,’ she immediately pictured Robert Redford in the lead role. However, he declined the part, explaining that he felt the character lacked strength.

He purposefully avoided taking a firm position – and he was correct to do so. After many revisions, Bob finally gave his approval. He was a remarkably nuanced actor, and working with him was a joy because his unpredictability kept every scene fresh and exciting.

Barbra Streisand also spoke fondly of Robert Redford, describing him as a kind and mature man. She affectionately called him a ‘little intellectual cowboy’ who always forged his own path, and shared that she misses him deeply.

The actress concluded by singing The Way We Were from their film.

When Robert Redford passed away last year, Barbra Streisand posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.

Barbra Streisand recalled that working on the film ‘The Way We Were’ was a wonderfully exciting and fulfilling experience. She noted the striking contrast between herself and Robert Redford – he grew up around horses, while she was allergic – but they made a genuine effort to understand each other, mirroring the connection between their characters in the movie.

She fondly remembered Bob as a captivating, smart, and passionate person—a truly gifted actor. She recalled their last meeting over lunch, where they bonded over art and promised to share their earliest sketches with each other. She cherished having worked with him, describing him as irreplaceable. #RobertRedford

Fonda and Redford made four movies together and also the 2017 Netflix movie Our Souls at Night.

Rachel McAdams paid tribute to women who died, singling out Diane Keaton.

She stated that every actress of her generation was captivated by and drew inspiration from the unique talent of one particular performer.

McAdams remembered a Girl Scout song and poem that Keaton often recited while filming: ‘Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other gold. A circle is round and never-ending, just like our friendship.’

Okay, seriously, I was wrecked at the Oscars last night. Billy Crystal, my absolute hero, did this incredible, long tribute to Rob Reiner – they’re best friends, you know? It wasn’t just a quick mention, it was so heartfelt and emotional. I mean, Billy really felt it, and honestly, it made me tear up too. It was beautiful, just a really beautiful moment for Rob.

Crystal began the segment, which was longer than normal due to the many famous actors and actresses who had passed away in the last year.

Crystal first met Reiner in 1975 when he guested on ‘All in the Family.’

Rob and Crystal had a great time working together, and Rob even suggested they continue playing off each other. Crystal explained, “He said it was so much fun playing my best friend, why don’t we keep it going?” She also shared that it was exciting to watch Rob grow from a talented comedic actor into a skilled storyteller.

Crystal mentioned several films directed by Rob Reiner, including The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, Say Anything, and This is Spinal Tap.

The show concluded with more than a dozen actors from those movies – like Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland, Fred Savage, Demi Moore, John Cusack, and Ione Skye – all gathered on stage together.

Actor and director Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death at their Los Angeles home last December. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with their murders and maintains his innocence.
