James McAvoy’s $77M Horror Remake, Speak No Evil, Becomes a Global Hit on Netflix 2 Years Later

Hearing this news in April 2026 was a surprise, but he’d be thrilled. James McAvoy has consistently demonstrated incredible acting versatility, including in horror films—he famously redefined a superhero series with a terrifying performance in the 2016 film Split.

When James McAvoy decided to return to horror with the 2025 psychological thriller Speak No Evil, it wasn’t surprising that he delivered another strong performance. In fact, the film has recently gained renewed popularity, becoming one of the top 5 most-streamed movies on Netflix in April and reaching the number one spot in multiple countries, reminding audiences of the power of great acting.

James McAvoy received a nomination for Best Actor (Film/Television) from the British Academy Scotland Awards for his role as Paddy in Speak No Evil. His portrayal of the character, a disturbingly violent father who mutilates his son, earned him the recognition.

Speak No Evil Levels Up Over the Original

Many people don’t know that a previous film shared this title, but director James Watkins believed James McAvoy would significantly improve upon it.

Aisling Franciosi (known from Game of Thrones and The Abandons) played Paddy’s wife, Ciara, in the American adaptation, and Dan Hough (HollyOaks) starred as their son, Ant. Ant remains silent throughout the movie, but it’s eventually revealed that he isn’t actually mute.

Scoot McNairy (known from True Detective) plays Ben Dalton, a man determined to protect his family – his wife Louise, played by Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), and their daughter Agnes, played by Alix West Lefler (Resident Alien) – from the unsettlingly charismatic Paddy, portrayed by McAvoy. The Dalton family proved essential in understanding Ant’s desperate message: his father is dangerous, and everyone needs to escape.

Will There Be a Sequel to Speak No Evil?

The horror film Speak No Evil was a major financial success, grossing over $77 million globally on a modest $15 million budget. It also received positive reviews, earning an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on thousands of reviews.

Given the strong reaction to the film, it’s understandable why a sequel might be considered, either by the director or the studio. However, there are currently no plans for one. The director specifically crafted this version of Speak No Evil to be a complete story for this cast, meaning any follow-up wouldn’t feature James McAvoy in the lead role.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing that some movies, like 2024’s Speak No Evil, work best as standalone stories. This means viewers can simply enjoy and revisit James McAvoy’s performance, which is exactly what’s happening.
