James Cameron’s Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 “metric” has been revealed.

James Cameron has shared the target budgets for the next two Avatar movies, which are receiving significant script revisions from the original creator. Following the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the future of Avatar 4 and its sequel was uncertain. Cameron had mentioned that the third film’s success would determine if the fourth and fifth movies would be made. Although Disney still has them scheduled for release, a final decision hasn’t been made about continuing the series.

I was listening to The Empire Film Podcast (through The Playlist) and James Cameron shared some exciting news! He’s actually writing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 right now, and plans to fit them in alongside his other work. Apparently, the reason things are taking a little longer is because he and Disney are trying to figure out how to make the films more affordably – they’re aiming to cut the production time in half and the cost to about two-thirds of what they originally planned. He thinks it’ll take about a year to fully work out the details, but I’m still really excited for what’s to come!

I’m currently working on several writing projects, including ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’. These films are very expensive and time-consuming to make, so we’re exploring new technologies to streamline the process. My goal is to cut the production time in half and reduce the cost to two-thirds of what it currently is. It will likely take about a year to figure out the best way to achieve that.

Despite earning $1.49 billion worldwide – a substantial amount considering its $350-400 million budget – Avatar: Fire and Ash didn’t perform as well as previous Avatar films, which each grossed over $2 billion. This raised questions about the future of the franchise, but producer Rae Sanchini has now confirmed that the next two movies are currently in pre-production, with Fire and Ash scheduled for digital release in March 2026.

So, from what James Cameron’s said, it sounds like the biggest challenge with making future Avatar movies is money! Bringing Pandora to life with all that incredible CGI is super expensive, and the movies are long – over three hours each! It makes total sense that the next two films need to be made more economically, but Cameron still wants to keep that amazing, realistic look we all love about the franchise.

Cameron and Disney still have a lot of planning to do, even though the recent Avatar: Fire and Ash left some storylines open for future films. Addressing these will be important for the franchise’s continued success, which is expected to remain profitable, particularly if they can control costs without sacrificing quality. While their specific approach isn’t clear, it should secure the franchise’s long-term future.

Even though making them profitable might require some adjustments, it looks like Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will probably still be made, as long as James Cameron can finish the story the way he wants. We’ll likely hear more updates from Cameron and Disney about the sequels’ progress next year.
