Jack the Ripper’s grisly legacy: The latest updates in the case of the 19th-century serial killer

Jack the Ripper's grisly legacy: The latest updates in the case of the 19th-century serial killer

As a seasoned gamer and history enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the enigma that is Jack the Ripper. With countless hours spent delving into the dark corners of gaming worlds, solving mysteries, and uncovering hidden truths, I can’t help but be intrigued by the unsolved case of this notorious serial killer.

In this new season on Netflix, the true crime docuseries Unsolved Mysteries explores an age-old unsolved mystery – the identity of Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer from history. Once a figure shrouded in reality, he’s now more often associated with myths and souvenirs. Yet, Jack the Ripper continues to grip our imagination for over a century. Despite his notoriety, the case remains unsolved, leading one to wonder if it ever will be unraveled.

The show Unsolved Mysteries doesn’t push viewers towards a specific conclusion but rather seeks to disprove certain myths and underscore the brutal nature of the murders that occurred in 1888’s Whitechapel, emphasizing their grisly reality.

An incorrect assumption discussed in the episode is the notion that Sir William Gull could potentially be the perpetrator, suggesting he was involved in a complex plot that implicated the royal family.

Jack the Ripper is frequently considered a prime suspect, and numerous Hollywood adaptations have cast him in the role of the murderer. For instance, the 2001 film “From Hell” and the 1988 miniseries with Michael Caine both portray him as the killer. These depictions are based on real-life speculation surrounding his identity.

It’s important to mention that, according to some participants in the documentary, Gull was never a real suspect during the initial investigation. This is mainly because he had suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered in 1887, a year prior to the reported murders of the five victims often associated with the case (Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly).

Woman with alleged familial connection to original crime claims to know Jack the Ripper’s identity

In essence, “Unsolved Mysteries” doesn’t offer fresh insights regarding the case. If you’re familiar with numerous Jack the Ripper documentaries or literature, chances are you didn’t gain new information from it.

However, in July 2023, a woman stepped up, asserting she had information revealing the real identity of the killer. According to The Telegraph, crime writer Sarah Bax Horton suspects a cigar manufacturer named Hyam Hyams due to his physical traits aligning with eyewitness accounts of Jack the Ripper. Horton believes her grandfather was involved in the initial investigation, providing her exclusive access to medical records and witness descriptions not accessible to many others.

According to Horton, the eyewitness accounts depicted the suspect as a man with a rigid arm and an awkward walk due to bent knees. This description matches Hyams, who was reportedly stiff-armed from an injury and had other health issues that made him physically unconventional. Notably, Hyams had been hospitalized frequently in mental institutions, was previously arrested for assaulting his wife and mother, and worked as a cigar maker, which might imply he was skilled with knives.

According to The Telegraph’s report, Hyam Hyams is the first person ever definitively linked to Jack the Ripper based on unique physical traits.

It’s not just Horton who proposes Hyams as a potential suspect; Paul Begg, a renowned Ripper expert, has given his endorsement to her research. He found it to be thoroughly researched, well-written, and long overdue, describing the book titled “One-Armed Jack: Uncovering the Real Jack the Ripper” (published in February) as a comprehensive examination of a possible suspect.

Intriguingly, during an episode of Unsolved Mysteries focusing on Jack the Ripper’s enduring influence, historians express their eagerness for any new information about Jack the Ripper. They suggest that the crucial piece to cracking this case might be hidden in a forgotten document somewhere, potentially waiting undiscovered in someone’s attic.

Could it be possible that Horton’s theory is on point? If so, it could potentially be the key to finally cracking this case wide open.
