It’s The End Of An Era For Netflix’s Reacher Replacement, Which Had One Fatal Flaw

A popular show on Prime Video, often compared to Netflix’s Reacher, is finishing up, but it struggled with a key issue as the series went on. The Jack Reacher books have been incredibly popular for years, so it was natural for someone to create a TV or movie version. While the Tom Cruise films didn’t quite hit the mark, the Reacher series on Prime has become a major success.

Fans are really connecting with the Reacher series, and excitement is building for season four, which will be based on the thirteenth book, Gone Tomorrow. Amazon is clearly invested in the show’s success, as they’ve also announced a spin-off series called Neagley set to premiere in 2026.

As a thriller fan, I think Bosch really paved the way for Reacher‘s popularity. It was another series based on a super popular book series that just kept going and going. And honestly, over ten years later, Bosch is still going strong! They’ve got a spin-off with Ballard now, and even a prequel in the works, which is amazing.

The popularity of Reacher has encouraged other streamers to adapt well-known book series into shows. Amazon Prime Video has several successful adaptations like The Terminal List and Cross, and Netflix’s recent version of Man on Fire could become another long-running series.

Netflix had a big success with The Night Agent, which was adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name. The series starred Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent whose seemingly mundane job answering phones at the White House quickly turns into a thrilling and dangerous conspiracy. While the show was very popular in 2023, its initial excitement didn’t last long.

The Night Agent Is Coming To An Abrupt End With Season 4

When The Night Agent first launched, it attracted over 20 million viewers in its opening weekend, becoming one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the year. The second season still drew a strong audience with nearly 14 million views in its first weekend, though that was a decrease from its impressive debut year.

When the third season of The Night Agent premiered in 2026, it received fewer than nine million views. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising when Netflix announced that season four would be the show’s last. Considering how quickly Netflix cancels underperforming series, the fact that a fourth season was made at all is somewhat remarkable.

Despite a strong start, the cancellation feels sudden. The Night Agent grabbed viewers with its intriguing premise and the appealing chemistry between its leads, Peter and Rose, and the season one finale suggested a long run was possible. Unfortunately, declining viewership indicates the show couldn’t maintain its initial popularity.

Unlike Reacher, The Night Agent Suffered From A Lack Of Source Material

Before the TV show even started, Reacher already had a dedicated following thanks to the popular novels and the two previous movies starring Tom Cruise. With 30 novels in the series written by Lee Child, the show has a solid base and could potentially continue for many years.

The biggest challenge for the creators of the show each year is deciding which fantastic novel to adapt next. While this is also true for shows like Bosch and The Terminal List, The Night Agent had a unique problem: it was only based on one book.

Matthew Quirk, the author behind the source material, didn’t continue writing for the show, and it began to struggle after its first season. The second season felt like a retread of the first, heavily influenced by the show 24. While the third season showed some improvement, the decision to remove the character Rose was a mistake that hurt the show’s chemistry. Though season three of The Night Agent was a positive step, it never quite recaptured the strength of the original season.

A show like Game of Thrones experienced a significant drop in quality once it moved beyond the books by George R.R. Martin. Having a book series to guide the story, as Reacher did, can be incredibly helpful – it’s clear now that The Night Agent could have really benefited from that kind of foundation.

The Night Agent Could Still Continue In Another Form

Even if The Night Agent becomes a huge hit for Netflix, it’s unlikely they’ll change their minds and make another season. However, they might follow Amazon’s example with Jack Ryan and continue the story with a spin-off movie.

A movie based on The Night Agent could be a great move. Some of the slower episodes in seasons two and three felt like filler between major events. A film could jump right into a focused mission with clear goals for Peter. However, whether this happens will likely depend on how well season four is received.
