It’s Officially a New Era For Avatar: The Last Airbender

2026 promises to be a great year for fans of Avatar. We’ll not only get a new movie featuring an older Team Avatar in October on Paramount+, but also a classic 2D fighting game this summer!

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game isn’t just a fun game with nods to the series; it’s a special experience for fans. For the first time, it combines the universes of The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, letting beloved characters from both shows meet and interact.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is Releasing in 2026

Since its debut in the mid-2000s, Avatar: The Last Airbender has consistently stayed popular. Beyond the original series, which many consider the best animated show ever, the story has continued to expand with new content. This includes The Legend of Korra, a four-season sequel, numerous novels and comic books that delve deeper into the world’s history, and a live-action remake on Netflix. Looking ahead, a new movie is planned for 2026, followed by another in 2027.

While Avatar is beloved across many platforms, it hasn’t found much success in video games. Several games based on The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have been released, but none have really resonated with fans or captured the heart of the original series.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game aims to be different. Developed by Gameplay Group International as a classic 2D fighting game, it’s scheduled for release on July 2, 2026, and appears to be hitting all the right notes to please fans.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will appreciate the game’s diverse character roster, faithful visuals that capture the spirit of the show, and fresh animations of their favorite characters. Fighting game enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy with Story, Arcade, and Training modes, reliable online play thanks to rollback netcode, and a reasonable $30 price.

Avatar Legends Breaths New Life Into The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

The fighting game, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, will launch with twelve playable characters. The initial roster includes Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Azula, and Ozai from The Last Airbender, as well as Korra and Zaheer from The Legend of Korra. Players will also be able to control alternate versions of Aang and Korra when they’re in their powerful Avatar States.

What’s most exciting about this new lineup is the opportunity to see beloved characters from The Last Airbender interact with each other in ways we’ve never seen before. Conversations between Aang and Korra will be especially enjoyable, as will their scenes with Kyoshi, who shares a connection to them through past lives.

It would be exciting to see Korra meet younger versions of Team Avatar, especially since she only knows them as wise elders. While Aang: The Last Airbender and Seven Havens stick to the established storyline, Legends is opening up new possibilities for the franchise, showing that stories that aren’t strictly part of the main canon are also welcome.

It’s hard to predict how popular Legends will become, or how much the game will grow with future downloadable characters. Fans are already excited about the possibility of playing as characters like Iroh, Bumi, Bolin, Amon, and Kuvira, and seeing how their stories fit into the game’s dynamic and unpredictable narrative.

I think Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a fantastic way to kick off the next chapter for the Avatar universe. It’s great to reconnect with the characters we already love before the new shows and movies arrive. It really lets you see them in a fresh light, and finally, we get to experience them as playable characters in a video game!
