Seriously, if I’m getting impatient waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6, I can’t imagine how Kurt Kuhlmann feels! He used to be a loremaster, and I’ve heard he’s been waiting even longer than the rest of us.
I was a huge fan of Bethesda games for years, so I was really impressed to learn about Kuhlmann. The guy worked there for over two decades! He was a key part of making some of my favorites – he co-led the design on Skyrim and was the lead systems designer for Starfield. Honestly, he was so experienced, everyone just started calling him the ‘loremaster’ – it really fit!
He left the company in 2023 — and he’s only just now telling his story.
He recently told PC Gamer that he was once in line to be the lead designer on The Elder Scrolls 6. This offer came as early as 2015, around the time Fallout 4 was released.
The studio initially intended to begin work on the next Elder Scrolls game immediately after finishing Fallout 4, but they never followed through with that plan.
As many fans expected The Elder Scrolls VI after Fallout 4, we actually developed Fallout 76 first. And even after that, we didn’t start on TES6; instead, we moved onto Starfield, which turned out to be a much larger and more time-consuming project than our usual games, according to Kuhlmann.
“So from my point of view, I [had] been waiting like 11 years to be the lead on TES6.”
Man, it’s crazy to think it’s been over seven years since Bethesda first teased The Elder Scrolls 6 at E3 back in 2018. And apparently, people at the company were already working on the idea for over a decade before that! That’s a long time to be developing a game, and it’s kinda rough that it’s taken this long.
He says that later on, the company took back the offer for the lead designer position they had previously given him.
Kuhlmann had difficult discussions with leaders like Todd Howard from Bethesda. Although they wanted him involved in the project, the role wasn’t what he hoped for, so he ultimately decided to leave the company.
According to Kuhlmann, the planned story for The Elder Scrolls 6 was envisioned as being similar in tone to The Empire Strikes Back. The Thalmor, who were major enemies in Skyrim, would have been the main villains, having successfully completed their conquests.
It’s still unclear when The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released. However, recent reports suggest that most of Bethesda’s team is now working on the game, and development seems to be going smoothly.
How much longer can you stay patient? What do you hope to achieve with this game? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments, and maybe even imagine a future where you’re enjoying it after a long wait!
