It’s Always Sunny & Abbott Elementary Crossover Episode Sequel Potential Addressed By Mr. Johnson Actor

William Stanford Davis, who plays Mr. Johnson, discussed the possibility of a follow-up to the crossover episode featuring It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary.

As a huge fan of both shows, I was genuinely surprised – and delighted – that a crossover between Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actually worked! It started on Abbott Elementary in Season 4, Episode 9, “Volunteers,” where the Sunny gang showed up doing court-ordered community service at the school. Then, It’s Always Sunny picked it up in Season 17’s premiere, “The Gang Fs Up Abbott Elementary,” giving us a deeper look at their ridiculous plans and eventually bringing everyone together at Paddy’s Pub. It was a really fun way to blend the styles of both comedies.

I recently spoke with Tyler James Williams for ScreenRant about Abbott Elementary, and while he doesn’t have any inside info on future crossovers, he’s definitely hoping for more – especially with the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He was particularly blown away by Danny DeVito’s dedication. Seriously, this guy was a total pro, willing to go to any length for a scene – even getting covered in mud and stuck in a raccoon trap before filming even started! You can check out his full thoughts below.

Even if I did know, I couldn’t share! I’m really hoping we get to do more team-ups with other shows, though. Working with the cast of ‘It’s Always Sunny’ was a blast, and Danny DeVito was fantastic – he was game for anything!

There was this one scene involving a raccoon trap. The crew told us they were ready to film, and when we got to the set, he was already in the trap, covered in mud! I said to Tyler, “We really need to be more prepared! Look at him – he’s completely committed and already getting into character.” It would have taken me days to get like that! [Laughs] I would’ve been too careful and hesitant to just jump in.

I really enjoyed that experience and would love to do similar collaborations in the future. Quinta has introduced some fantastic guests, and I expect that high quality will continue. Hopefully, it will!

Now that Abbott Elementary is coming back for a sixth season and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for an eighteenth, another crossover between the two shows is definitely possible – and fans are hoping for one! We’ve already seen fun interactions like Mr. Johnson and Frank Reynolds sharing scenes, Barbara Howard helping Charlie Kelly learn to read, and Ava Coleman appointing Mac as her vice principal. But there are still plenty of other interesting character combinations that a future crossover could explore.

The Abbott Elementary episode “Volunteers” currently shares the highest rating on IMDb with an 8.6/10 – a score it shares with the episode “Party” from season 3. This high score suggests viewers are eager to see another crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, alongside the cast’s interest, and enjoy the unique blend of humor from both shows.

As a huge fan of Abbott Elementary, I’ve been keeping track of all the fun cameos and guest appearances! So far, the show’s only full crossover has been with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which was awesome. But beyond that, they’ve really branched out! They’ve had some fantastic appearances from people in the real world – like when Philadelphia Eagles players Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce, and Brandon Graham did a virtual chat with the students. And it was so cool to see the teachers at a Phillies game, where they even got to meet Kyle Schwarber! It’s great to see the show mixing things up with athletes, actors, and musicians.

Big stars like Bradley Cooper and Questlove have both appeared on the show, even acting in scenes set at the school itself. Several famous guest actors have returned for multiple episodes, especially when featuring the family of Janine (played by Quinta Brunson)—including her sister, played by Ayo Edebiri, and her mother, played by Taraji P. Henson.

As I see it, Quinta Brunson, the brilliant force behind Abbott Elementary, has already proven she knows how to bring in fantastic guest stars. And judging by that, I wouldn’t be surprised to see even more celebrities pop up on the show down the line—whether or not we ever get a crossover with the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crew.
