Is Gemma alive in The Capture? Here’s what happened at the end of season 3, with Rachel’s phone

The Capture season 3 ending spoilers follow.

The latest episode of season three of The Capture aired last night, and although a fourth season hasn’t been confirmed, the episode strongly hinted at one, spending much of its time introducing new storylines and characters.

We’re going to discuss the episode’s key plot details, so be warned – there will be spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet.

What happened in The Capture season 3’s final episode?

Gemma Garland, also known as Jacqueline Goldcross, was killed by William Walker while giving evidence about a procedure called Correction. However, the video recording of the event was altered – James Whitlock’s image was falsely inserted, and the dishonest Lord Frederickson supported this deception.

Rachel Carey earned the position of Commander and complete control of SO15. However, when she misused her Correction ability to try and clear Whitlock of Isaac Turner’s murder – the same ability she’s meant to uphold – E-Squadron ambushed her.

Someone fabricated evidence to falsely portray William as a Russian spy, causing widespread panic and damaging Rachel’s credibility.

The Capture season 3 final scene: what was that on Rachel’s phone?

After everything Rachel had endured – including seeing a shockingly realistic fake video of her sister Abigail being shot, and several close calls with danger herself – it wasn’t surprising she hadn’t been able to sleep and became overwhelmed with emotion when speaking with Abigail.

Abigail texted her sibling the selfies they’d just taken. When her sibling, Rachel, looked at the pictures, she noticed Gemma appearing in the window of one of them. But there was no one actually in the window – and if there had been, they would have been floating in mid-air. When Rachel looked at the photo again, Gemma had disappeared.

Okay, so I’m starting to wonder if Rachel’s just cracking under the pressure and lack of sleep. Or is someone messing with her head digitally? We’ve already seen how easily they can edit videos live, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they were adding and removing people from footage. It feels totally possible at this point.

Is Rachel’s mental state being manipulated by E-Squadron and their AI leader, Simon? Or could it be related to the technology Gemma created – specifically, the digital copy of Frank Napier she made to gain authorization?

When asked about the puzzling picture by Cosmopolitan, Rachel actress Holliday Grainger responded, “That’s really the question, isn’t it? It makes you wonder if you can trust what appears to be true.”

The Capture season 4: What could happen?

Rachel faces a huge challenge. After publicly undermining her and swaying public opinion, a powerful group of men – including Colonel Figgis, Lord Frederickson, and Commissioner Yates – appear to be enjoying their success.

She doubts she can win against Simon, because his sophisticated AI appears to anticipate everything and is incredibly effective at finding compromising information on people.

Okay, so I’m not totally alone in this mess. There’s this cop, Deputy Commissioner Talbot, who seems to be on my side and wants to get to the bottom of things. Plus, I still have some friends at the BBC and within the police force who can help. Then there’s Danny Hart – always a bit of a wildcard, honestly – and William… if he’s even still alive! That guy’s got a crazy high-tech pacemaker that’s kept him going through some seriously rough stuff, so you never know.

Although Gemma is likely gone, the digital versions of her and Frank might surprisingly team up.

Grainger admitted things appear difficult, explaining that while Napier and Garland have often been adversaries to her, she’s also developed respect and trust for them, and they’ve found ways to benefit each other.

There’s a sense that Carey is completely alone now, having lost both of them, and it’s also quite a hopeless situation.

The actor believes Rachel’s best approach to defeating the military’s AI commander is to first understand how it works.

She explained that if she were in Carey’s position, she’d need to find out who created Simon in order to trust him, and more importantly, who was ultimately responsible.

Will we even get The Capture season 4?

Currently, there hasn’t been an official announcement, but according to Grainger, the show’s creator, Ben Chanan, originally planned the series as a three-season story.

But with so much setup in the season 3 finale, those plans have surely expanded, right?
