Warning: This article Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 4, episode 5, “Give Us a Moment.”
One of the best things about Invincible is its huge cast of compelling characters. A long-standing fan favorite who hasn’t had much screen time is finally getting a chance to shine. With so many well-developed heroes and villains already, it’s tough to give everyone the attention they deserve.
Now that the war with the Viltrumites has truly begun, some of the show’s main characters will take a backseat. The story will focus more on the members of the Coalition of Planets and the Viltrum Empire. This could mean characters like Eve, Debbie, and the Guardians of the Globe will have limited screen time for the rest of the season, depending on how the story unfolds.
Despite the mixed reception to episode four of Invincible season four – which received the lowest ratings of the series – it did bring back a familiar face: Art Rosenbaum. After being absent for almost an entire season, Art made a welcome cameo in episode four and then reappeared in episode five, giving the character the attention he deserved.
Invincible Season 4 Is Finally Giving Mark Hamill’s Art More To Do
Mark Hamill, the voice of Art Rosenbaum in Invincible, gets a bit more to do in season 4, though his role remains small. In the first two seasons, Art was a trusted advisor for both Mark and Debbie, but his appearances became less frequent as the show went on.
Art appeared only briefly in season 3 of Invincible, aside from the first episode. He designed Oliver’s initial superhero costume and helped Mark with his blue and black suit. After being limited to costume design in the previous season, it was good to see him play a more significant role this time.
As a viewer, I was really struck by how much of an impact this character had on the latest season of Invincible. It wasn’t just a cameo; he genuinely spurred Mark to reconnect with his classic look, and more importantly, gave him a much-needed boost when he was struggling emotionally. But the highlight for me was the unexpected scene in episode 5 – seeing him sit down with Omni-Man, sharing a drink and just… talking. It was a surprisingly human moment between two incredibly powerful, and previously antagonistic, figures.
Despite appearing friendly, Art subtly told Nolan he wouldn’t be making him any more suits, implying that Earth now considered Omni-Man a villain due to his heroic suits only being made for heroes. After Omni-Man left, Art visibly relaxed, revealing he’d been frightened of Nolan during their conversation.
While seemingly minor, Art’s roles are actually essential to establishing him as a true friend and support system for the Graysons. The fact that even Omni-Man sought him out when he needed help proves Art serves as a strong moral guide for the main characters, and it’s rewarding to see him utilized effectively.
Mark Hamill’s Art Has Been A Quiet, Yet Vital, Presence In Invincible Since Season 1
While the main plot of Invincible would still happen without Art, his presence deeply impacts the characters, especially Nolan. Art has been Nolan’s closest friend on Earth, and this connection might be even more important in driving Nolan’s conflict with the Viltrumites than we realize.
Art has always been genuine, and even though he was afraid of Nolan in season four, he bravely shared how he really felt. This makes Nolan seem more human, and it’s possible he secretly values their past. Art was also incredibly important in helping Debbie cope with the emotional fallout after Omni-Man’s betrayal.
He was a supportive friend to Debbie, offering both comfort and helpful advice that helped her become more resilient and start to heal. Without his encouragement, she might not have been able to confront Omni-Man in the recent episode of Invincible; Art gave her the strength to stand up for what she believed in.
He’s now guiding Mark to avoid making the same mistakes as his father, and this isn’t the first time he’s been a supportive figure for him. Although Art doesn’t participate in battles or have major storylines of his own, he consistently delivers the heart and emotional depth in Invincible, solidifying his importance to the show.
That’s why they cast a voice actor as skilled as Mark Hamill – he can bring the right level of experience and emotion to a character who represents consistent hope. Although Invincible is known for losing characters, Art should remain a key figure for as long as possible, as he’s the Grayson family’s most dependable and steadfast friend.
