From concept to creation: Developer Insights
Christoph Minnameier, an indie developer from Germany, had a captivating chat with us about Dungeons of Dreadrock 2. In this discussion, he unveiled intriguing aspects such as the game’s origins, its storyline development, the hurdles encountered while crafting puzzles, and the fine-tuning process for puzzle difficulty, among other topics.
Mr. Christoph shared that he created the games known as Dungeons of Dreadrock while also working his day job. Due to the success of these two projects, he announced this year that he will be devoting himself fully to independent work. Regarding his team, he mentioned that although he manages most aspects of game development himself, he’s grateful for Fabian and Dmytro, who contribute their exceptional pixel art skills.
In addition, we delved into his past, and it turned out that aside from having a PhD in computer science, he pens children’s stories. Previously, he served as a professor in the field of Game Design.
The inspiration behind Dungeons of Dreadrock 2
As a gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to delve into the story behind the critically acclaimed Dungeons of Dreadrock series, especially since its latest installment has been garnering praise and accolades. I was curious to understand how this sequel would expand upon the solid foundation laid by its predecessor, and what inspired the creators’ imaginations in crafting such an immersive world.
When I inquired about the topic, Mr. Christoph revealed that as an ’80s kid, his childhood was filled with traditional dungeon crawlers. “Upon the release of Legend of Grimrock around a decade ago, I played it partly out of nostalgia and partly because it stood out as an exceptional game in its own right,” he pointed out.
He mentioned that playing Legend of Grimrock showed him “the benefits of grid-based movement, particularly in terms of readability and puzzle construction,” which served as the initial spark for Dungeons of Dreadrock. Furthermore, he stated, “My aim was to make this genre appealing to a broader audience.
The storyline of Dungeons of Dreadrock 2 and its
progression in the trilogy
When I asked about the plot and development of this game within the series, Mr. Christoph provided some intriguing insights. He revealed that although “the foundation for Episode 1 was straightforward – perhaps even a bit predictable – yet it remained engaging,” Episode 2 introduces a new main character who initially appeared as an NPC in the initial game. This time around, she embarks on her unique journey with her own mission.
In this narrative, she is assigned by the Order of the Flame on a quest to acquire a powerful artifact. This artifact could potentially tip the scales in their ongoing war against an opposing faction. Interestingly, this game provides you with two distinct conclusions, enabling you to choose whether to carry out this mission or prioritize saving her siblings instead.
In the recap of the initial episode, he disclosed that “your brother wasn’t destined to compete with the king, but was chosen annually as a ritualistic offering by the village leaders.” Essentially, in the closing moments of Episode 1, you could overthrow the king.
The biggest challenge in designing fresh and engaging puzzles
Mr. Christoph explained that since he had already utilized most of the familiar puzzles from traditional dungeon crawler games, he was compelled to invent fresh ones. He also mentioned that considering the players of Part 1 wouldn’t want to reexperience a 30-level tutorial again, these new puzzles needed to be more intricate.
Initially, he shared that the concepts for levels in DoD2 were ones he had originally discarded during Episode 1. Looking back, he acknowledged that starting with those levels wasn’t ideal as none of them ended up being included in Part 2. Towards the end, he expressed his exhaustion and gratitude for discovering some enemy designs that enabled him to create fresh puzzles for his game.
Balancing puzzle difficulty to create a challenging and enjoyable gameplay experience
As a puzzle enthusiast myself, I start by crafting a puzzle that’s not overly complex initially. The intrigue isn’t about the difficulty level at first; instead, it lies in the tale the solution tells. In other words, I aim to create a puzzle where the answer is engaging, enjoyable, and subtly infused with narrative elements.
Speaking as an enthusiast, I’d share that when he feels a puzzle is genuine to his senses, he evaluates its complexity. If it seems too straightforward for me, he incorporates an unexpected element—something the player might initially overlook, making them believe their solution is almost correct but there’s a missing piece they haven’t noticed yet.
As stated by Mr. Christoph, this twist elevates the puzzle’s complexity and keeps players hooked. Moreover, he mentioned that if an innovative concept becomes overly complex, he adjusts them accordingly. He suggested possible ways to do so such as:
1. Streamlining the solution process or providing hints like visual clues or messages left by a previous dungeon explorer.
2. If required, playtesting is essential, and if his friends find it too difficult, he will make adjustments again.
Influence behind its visual design and distinct art style
Initially, I, as a fellow enthusiast, embarked on the creation of Dungeons of Dreadrock 1 merely as a pastime, utilizing pre-existing resources. However, little did I expect that one day, I’d be fortunate enough to employ an artist solely for my game’s artwork, remarking, “I never fathomed that someone would create art exclusively for my humble game.
As a passionate gamer, I chanced upon this stunning high-res pixel art masterpiece by Dmytro, and it left me smitten at first sight. Not too long after, I stumbled upon Fabian, and decided to collaborate with them both. I journeyed down memory lane and recalled the stock assets that I had initially been using. To enhance my game’s visual appeal, I hired these two talented artists to gradually replace those assets over time.
He stated, “Regarding Episode 2, we managed to enhance every aspect, particularly improving the animation clarity, and this was made possible due to the profits from Episode 1, which allowed us to compensate the artists for their extra work.
How the audio and music enhance the atmosphere of Dreadrock Mountain
As a game enthusiast, I find it quite captivating to blend the charm of pixel art with authentic audio. The crackle of torches, the soothing sound of flowing water, and the eerie dungeon ambiance transport me back into the game, despite the top-down perspective that somewhat detaches me from the action.
In discussing the original concept of the game, he explained how the team intended to integrate diverse sounds within the game to enhance the player’s experience. For instance, there is conventional fantasy music that captivates you, but as you conquer a puzzle, you’ll hear an exhilarating chiptune sound from the stairs, indicating your advancement to the next level.
It’s pleasant to discover that he composed a tune to motivate himself, utilizing their piano. He disclosed, “The song can be heard in the trailer and the game,”, also adding that there’s a chiptune rendition of the melody which is used for the staircase.
The most rewarding experience of creating the series as an Indie developer
In conversation about his most satisfying moment, he noted that there were numerous possibilities, making a single selection quite challenging for him. However, he reminisced about conducting the initial playtests with his friends, describing it as “something that almost took the place of social interactions during the pandemic.
His game has garnered numerous positive reviews, which are clearly visible. He expressed his happiness over “thousands of appreciative reviews on Google Play,” mentioning that he took the time to read and respond to each one. Additionally, he acknowledged the “awards from various gaming industries” that the series has earned.
Showing appreciation to all, he stated, “I feel both proud and thankful simultaneously, and the feedback I’ve received thus far has inspired me to persevere.
What can you expect in the final episode of this exciting trilogy
In the game that offers two conclusions, he disclosed that one of them can be considered as the correct ending, where the sorceress finds herself in a dire predicament. He intends to initiate Episode 3’s narrative with the siblings returning to aid her, establishing an enticing foundation for the concluding chapter.
What truly stood out for me was his meticulousness and consistent narrative flow, as he expressed, “He even connected Part 3 with the conclusion of Part 1.” Without giving away too much, he subtly suggested the plot of Episode 3, where the brother asks his sister what their next move should be, to which she replies, “We should go home, little brother.
He enthusiastically discussed his plans, revealing his enthusiasm for the concept, to which his brother responded, “Regrettably, we can’t proceed right away,” due to his understanding that the sorceress remains below.
His advice for indie developers trying multi-episode projects
As the interview was wrapping up, I inquired about his advice for independent developers working on multiple-episode projects. He responded by saying, “If your initial episode has been successful, then I believe you should almost consider it a necessity to continue with the project.
Mr. Christoph recognizes the hurdles in garnering attention within today’s competitive video game market, a sentiment I concur with. His advice is, “If you can expand on an established intellectual property (IP), I would recommend doing so.” However, he also mentioned that providing guidance can be tricky due to his unique circumstances. He elaborated, “Since the first part was a story-driven game with a conclusion, simply adding ‘more stages’ wasn’t an option for me.” Instead, he aimed “to ensure that the second installment wouldn’t diminish the impact of the first one.
He values interacting with his community greatly, as shown by his statement: “I incorporated the suggestions from my community into my own ideas.” He elaborated on how he developed a comprehensive strategy to pinpoint precisely what enhancements were necessary for the game’s sequel, ensuring it would be an authentic improvement for all players. “Only after that, I populated it with content and storyline” was his next step, according to him.
In simpler terms, he suggested, “It’s important to understand your product, your customers, what they expect, and make thoughtful decisions about each design choice.
Final Verdict from the Editor
