As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to movie-to-game adaptations. But Indiana Jones has always managed to dodge the cursed artifact of a truly abysmal game, thankfully. However, let’s not forget that the less-than-stellar Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left a bit of a sour taste in many of our collective mouths. But I digress, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle seems to be shaping up as a grand, old-school matinee adventure, nestled neatly between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.

As a hardcore Indy fan, I must admit that it’s remarkable how the Indiana Jones movie franchise has managed to avoid a truly disappointing video game adaptation – at least, that’s what I’ve heard. However, let’s not forget about the infamous Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which, without a doubt, left a sour taste in many of our mouths, making it one of the less-than-stellar Indy films. It’s safe to say that this movie took a chunk out of my childhood innocence.

Significantly, it appears that developer MachineGames has all the essential components for a thrilling worldwide adventure, including the classic items like Indiana Jones’ whip, pistol, and fedora. The journey will take you to various captivating locations brimming with hidden treasures, such as the Himalayas, the Vatican, and Wat Si Sawai temples in Thailand. Alongside journalist Gina, you’ll be hot on the trail of priceless artifacts, racing against time to beat both the Nazis and the villainous Voss to these treasures. Fortunately, this is Indiana Jones at his best, so when circumstances call for it, you can rely on his charisma and problem-solving skills to gain an advantage over your adversaries.

Although it might appear unusual that the Great Circle is a first-person game, MachineGames appears to be right at home, drawing on their past works at Starbreeze such as The Chronicles of Riddick, The Darkness, Syndicate (2012), and the rebooted Wolfensteins. Despite the first-person perspective not being a typical choice for an Indiana Jones game, based on what’s been shown so far, the fluid transitions to third person during key scenes, along with intimate close-ups during combat and exploration, seem to blend nicely.

In this game, The Great Circle isn’t just about following a straight path. You have the freedom to deviate from the main course for side quests or discover hidden treasures. Engaging in these detours can be beneficial, earning you Adventure Books that allow you to accumulate Adventure Points to enhance Indy’s abilities and uncover more secrets. Skills like ‘True Grit,’ for instance, will give Indy a new lease of life if he gets knocked down during combat, but it’s not all about fighting; there are also opportunities for photography, exploration, and discovery. Every action, whether it’s taking photos, engaging in a fight, or digging up artifacts, contributes to your Adventure Points, so most diversions you choose won’t be fruitless. Indy’s journal is a valuable tool for solving puzzles, remembering important details, or finding guidance on where to go next. If you happen to overlook something, you can always revisit previously explored areas.

In your new role, you’ll have the ability to use stealth and disguises to sneak into enemy camps and restricted zones, either distracting or incapacitating enemies. If necessary, you can conceal their bodies to avoid detection. This aligns perfectly with MachineGames’ goal of immersing you not just as a player, but as Indiana Jones in the Great Circle. To achieve this authenticity, the studio collaborated closely with Lucasfilm, gaining access to the film archives, and had productive creative discussions with the people responsible for Indy. The focus, as stated by the developer, is on maintaining a balance between realism, humor, and the action-packed fun that characterizes Indiana Jones movies.

Game Director Jerk Gustafsson shares that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a delightful, humorous adventure movie-style game, stating it’s their largest project to date. He describes The Great Circle as a direct follow-up to Raiders of the Lost Ark, promising fans an authentic 1930s archaeological expedition with a touch of the original films’ 1980s atmosphere. The game will feature Indy, voiced by Troy Baker, who bears a resemblance to Harrison Ford, though some may argue that his portrayal doesn’t always sound like the classic Indiana Jones character. However, it seems Baker’s impression of Ford isn’t perfect, as it occasionally veers away from sounding like the iconic hero we’re familiar with.

After thoroughly experiencing gameplay, exploring ominous catacombs and ancient temples filled with challenging traps and puzzles (feel free to simplify puzzle complexity if needed), along with the thrilling, high-speed action sequences that Indiana Jones is famous for, it’s safe to say that The Great Circle certainly appears authentic. It’s clear that MachineGames has a genuine affection for the whip-wielding hero and his cinematic adventures (the enjoyable ones, specifically). As an obvious tribute to this cherished character and a gameplay experience that seems dedicated to preserving the essence of what makes the Indy films so entertaining, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appears set to offer something truly remarkable when it releases for Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9th.
