In a new documentary, Scott Peterson presents alternate theory of his wife's murder

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen cases both open and closed, but few have left such a lasting impact as the Laci Peterson case. The recent release of “Face to Face with Scott Peterson” on Peacock has rekindled the flame of intrigue that first ignited in 2003.

Approximately twenty years after Scott Peterson was found guilty of killing his expectant wife, Laci Peterson, two newly released documentaries have once again thrust this well-known case into public attention.

However, among all available options, the program titled “Face to Face with Scott Peterson,” debuting on Tuesday on Peacock, is unique because it features Scott Peterson himself, marking his first on-camera interview since 2003.

In the initial scenes of “Face to Face,” Peterson asserts, “I didn’t cause harm to my family.” This three-part documentary series, skillfully crafted by Shareen Anderson and Po Kutchins, debuted shortly after Netflix’s “American Murder: The Family of Laci Peterson” premiered on the platform last Wednesday.

51-year-old Peterson has consistently claimed his innocence ever since his apprehension, which followed the discovery of Laci Peterson’s remains along the San Francisco Bay shoreline in April 2003. In a recent interview on “Face to Face,” Peterson delved back into Laci’s mysterious disappearance on Christmas Eve 2002 and spent a significant amount of time reevaluating the police investigation, proposing potential explanations that could clear his spouse.

As I sit here inside Mule Creek State Prison, serving a sentence of life without parole, I can’t help but reflect on my past actions and the trial that followed. In hindsight, I deeply regret not testifying during my trial. However, it is important for me to speak up now, not for myself, but for my family. I yearn for them to understand the truth and find closure amidst this tumultuous journey we’ve been on together.

“Peterson expresses that if he’s given an opportunity to expose the truth, and people are open to understanding it, it could alleviate some pain from his family. This, for him, would be the most significant achievement at present.”

Two documentaries have surfaced recently, coming after news items from earlier this year announcing that the Los Angeles Innocence Project had taken up Peterson’s case. The charitable group had declared back then that they were looking into Peterson’s claim of genuine innocence.

In March, the Los Angeles Innocence Project asked for fresh DNA testing on approximately 15 pieces of evidence they believed would clear Scott Peterson. A judge decided in May that only one of these items, a strip of duct tape found on Laci Peterson’s thigh which was gathered 20 years ago, could undergo re-examination for DNA analysis.

“Elaborating further on the potential evidence, ‘Face to Face’ presents a contrasting perspective from that used by the prosecution to convict Scott Peterson. The documentary also implies that the intense media frenzy surrounding the Modesto couple during Laci Peterson’s disappearance may have influenced the verdict, contradicting Scott Peterson and his supporters’ assertions of insufficient evidence.”

Peterson addresses his affair with Amber Frey

According to the series, there wasn’t any concrete proof linking Peterson to the murders of his wife and the unborn child. However, a potential reason for these crimes could be inferred as he was discovered to be involved in an extra-marital relationship with Amber Frey.

Frey’s testimonies and the recorded conversations between her and Peterson contributed significantly to portraying Peterson as an untruthful and dishonest person in the public perception.

In an interview titled “Face to Face,” Peterson admits, “I acted incredibly selfish and hurtful by having an affair outside our marriage.” During what he calls the ‘investigation,’ he did everything possible to reunite his family. He chose not to disclose his infidelity with Frey because he wanted the search for resolution to continue. It seems understandable that she tried to develop a relationship after the fact and make it seem more significant than it was, but in reality, it wasn’t.

Still, he says he feels “shame and guilt” about it.

Peterson presents his theories about what actually happened

In the article titled “Face to Face,” Peterson’s allies, which include his sister-in-law, Janey Peterson, argue that the police failed to thoroughly explore potential evidence that could have cleared Scott Peterson in the early stages of investigating Laci Peterson’s vanishing act.

According to Scott Peterson, it’s quite common for there to be pieces of evidence contradicting a detective’s theory that get disregarded. He suggests that people often cling to the solution they prefer as the truth.

According to Peterson, since the police considered him the main suspect, they failed to pursue some leads and ruled out the possibility that Laci Peterson was kidnapped as part of a burglary incident happening near their neighborhood.

The show additionally brings up doubts concerning the sequence of Laci’s disappearance due to reported sightings by witnesses and a van that was taken and later burned down approximately a mile from the Peterson residence. Inside this van, there was a mattress that one detective suggested had stains resembling blood, but lab results showed no traces of blood.

Back in May, a court decision thwarted my hope for a retested mattress in the Peterson case. Yet, those knowledgeable individuals interviewed in that gripping docuseries assert they’ve conversed with every reliable witness.

Peterson says he still remembers his last morning with Laci

Speaking about his past, specifically the life he led 20 years ago before his wife went missing, Peterson says, “Each memory feels vividly alive… and they continue to resonate with me.”

“Peterson said he left, anticipating returning in the afternoon for a delightful Christmas celebration after we’d both enjoyed our separate mornings. However, when I returned, Laci had already departed, along with my family,” Peterson explained. “I bid farewell to Laci, and then my family was no longer there.”
