“I’m trying to be ultimate good boy”: Meet the Oblivion Remastered player on a quest to become “peak knight” by accruing all the RPG’s most virtuous gear and titles

One player of Oblivion Remastered is embarking on a mission to be the least chivalrous knight in history, which contrasts sharply with my own playthrough experience.

On the Reddit forum for Oblivion, user walu-who-ji recently inquired if they had reached their aim of becoming the game’s ideal knight, or “peak knight.” They mentioned that they aspire to be the RPG’s epitome of a good boy and are looking for suggestions on whether there are ways they could further embody knighthood.

Apart from being the Grand Champion of the Arena, the Master of the Fighter’s Guild, and a Pilgrim of the Nine Divines, they were also a Knight-Errant of the White Stallion, a Knight Brother of the Blades, an Honorary Knight of the Knights of the Thorn, a Divine Crusader of the Knights of the Nine. They belonged to the Order of the Virtuous Blood, reflecting their adherence to the chivalric ideals. Notably, they had no affiliation with the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, or Mage’s College.

Is it possible to knight any harder than this or am I peak Knight? from r/oblivion

Instead of simply having a catalog of knightly titles, our protagonist is not only adorned with various chivalrous accouterments in Cyrodiil, but also equipped with the essentials. Primarily, he wears enchanted Order armor, but he also wields a traditional sword and shield combo due to Thorneblade and the Escrutcheon of Chorrol. However, as per the Oblivion community’s consensus, there seems to be one significant missing item – Count Cirion’s helmet, which is granted upon aiding in lifting a curse within the Shivering Isles DLC expansion.

In the character creation process, it’s worth noting that the option to choose the Knight class is missing for a Breton born under The Lord Birthsign. However, walu-who-ji expresses a preference for crafting their own unique class instead. As for potential future developments, one player suggested that marrying Mazoga, the noble knight, could lead to the creation of a new lineage of knights through a bloodline.

Although it’s admirable to stay on the virtuous path in many games, I struggle to connect with the wholesome persona. In most role-playing games, I usually choose the friendly options; however, Skyrim and Oblivion are exceptions to this norm. During my Oblivion Remastered playthrough, I opted for a malicious route, concentrating nearly entirely on ruthless Dark Brotherhood assassinations, enhancing my stealth by joining the Thieves’ Guild, and triumphing in the Arena through underhanded tactics. Essentially, I transformed into a cunning thief causing chaos across Cyrodiil, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The pursuit of being an “ultimate good boy” is laudable, but it’s not a journey I’m planning to embark on.
