I’m a Virgo: Prime Video’s Hidden Sci-Fi Gem With Walton Goggins & 96% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Prime Video has a lot of great shows that people overlook, and one you really shouldn’t miss is the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama I’m a Virgo, starring Walton Goggins. While many might think of Fallout when considering hidden gems on the platform, I’m a Virgo – a seven-episode series from 2023 – is the one that truly deserves more recognition.

Even though this Prime Video series has a fantastic Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, it hasn’t gotten much attention from viewers. That’s surprising, considering the show is about a thirteen-foot-tall teenager trying to stay hidden. Once Jharrel Jerome’s character, Cootie, is revealed to the world, people start trying to take advantage of him.

As someone who absolutely loved Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You – that movie just messed with your head in the best way – I was really excited for I’m a Virgo. And honestly, it delivers. Like Sorry to Bother You, it really makes you think about the world we live in and the things that aren’t quite right, but this time with a main character you genuinely root for. It’s just as original and unique as Riley’s film, a truly one-of-a-kind show.

I’m A Virgo Is A Prime Video Hidden Gem Featuring Walton Goggins

While Walton Goggins is famous for many roles, his performance in I’m a Virgo might be his most wonderfully bizarre yet. He’s captivating as Jay Whittle, a self-absorbed billionaire who thinks he’s Oakland’s hero – until a newcomer named Cootie arrives and threatens that idea.

The show’s incredibly tall main character also finds himself targeted by different religious and political groups who want to use his size to further their own agendas. The show cleverly critiques the negativity of today’s world without feeling overly moralistic.

The show is also funny, with quick, well-timed jokes that perfectly target things ripe for satire. Being a Virgo probably helps with the precision!

What Is I’m A Virgo About?

At its heart, I’m a Virgo is a funny story about someone who doesn’t quite fit in, but it’s taken to a very large scale. The movie works so well largely because of Jharrel Jerome’s charming and sensitive performance. He plays Cootie, a teenager who’s been kept isolated from the world by his family due to his unusually large size.

He’s just starting to figure out how the world works outside of his family when different groups try to mold him into someone he isn’t. And, like all of Boots Riley’s comedies, the show also thoughtfully explores issues of race through its unique and imaginative premise.

I always found it jarring when Cootie pointed out how much people seemed to like him, because his aunt immediately shut it down with, ‘You’re a 13-foot tall Black man. They’re scared of you.’ It’s a point the show keeps coming back to, about how appearances can be deceiving, but honestly, I don’t think that’s the biggest thing BoJack was trying to say with that scene. It feels like there’s something deeper going on than just fear.

Cootie isn’t unique in the show when it comes to having unusual physical traits, and he’s definitely not the only character seen as a potential hero who people look to for a brighter future. Several actors in I’m a Virgo, like Walton Goggins and Jharrel Jerome, play characters who could be saviors.

Everything Boots Riley Makes For The Screen Is A Masterpiece

Whether it’s his film Sorry to Bother You or his latest movie, I Love Boosters, Boots Riley consistently creates truly exceptional work. He’s one of the few filmmakers today who effectively critiques capitalism, exposing its core flaws alongside its obvious contradictions and superficial problems.

Riley’s television debut is I’m a Virgo, and it’s been well-received. Considering the positive response to his previous work, I Love Boosters, it’s clear people appreciate his talent, and hopefully, this won’t be his last project.
