If your Oblivion Remastered save files are mysteriously disappearing or not syncing between devices, don’t worry: It’s not your fault, they’re just getting sent to the wrong place
Among the joys of having a Steam Deck is the freedom it provides me from being tethered to my desk while gaming, allowing me to continue playing on-the-go seamlessly. I was eagerly anticipating replicating this experience with Oblivion Remastered, but alas, tragedy befell me: My save files mysteriously vanished.
It appears I’m not alone in this predicament; my thorough investigation (which involved Googling my problem followed by adding “Reddit” to find similar issues) led me to numerous individuals experiencing the same predicament. Apparently, there’s an anomaly with how Oblivion saves files at the moment, and Bethesda is currently looking into the matter.
So, uh, where are my save files?
It appears that Oblivion Remastered doesn’t follow the usual practice of storing its save files alongside your other games. Instead, it insists on creating its own save files in C:\Users\[yourusername]\Documents\My Games, regardless of where you have set your saves to be stored. If this is your default location as well, then there should be no issues with your saves syncing properly across your PC and Steam Deck, as confirmed by our writer Joshua Wolens.
If you haven’t set Steam to look in your default directory for cloud saves, it might not find them. If your PC is structured similarly to mine, it’ll search within a OneDrive Documents folder instead of the Oblivion Remastered’s own directory. In different configurations, if your user profile is on another drive, Steam will look there instead.
Experiencing such a discrepancy can lead to a momentary sense of worry, just as it did with me. I’ve even encountered some extreme instances on Reddit where the game initially appears in your designated folder, but later attempts to retrieve from the default C Drive Documents folder instead, creating an illusion that you’ve inadvertently lost valuable hours of exploration within Cyrodiil.
If you’re playing games on your Steam Deck and want to transfer your save files to your computer, luckily there’s a straightforward method. I discovered that my Steam Deck save files were stored securely in a OneDrive folder. You can then copy these files over to the standard Documents folder on your PC (which is not OneDrive).
Experiencing the process of transferring files from my PC to Steam Deck was somewhat aggravating. I attempted to store the files in OneDrive, but it required some adjustments: turning off and then back on cloud saves for both devices while running the game on each of them several times before the cloud save finally synchronized, allowing me to proceed. It’s like trying to change an unwieldy wheel, and all that.
An alternative, more straightforward approach might involve disabling OneDrive within your Documents folder, as suggested by Reddit user MightyHorn. This could potentially resolve the issue.
If you’re moving files, it essentially involves transferring data from your default user profile directory to the folder created by Oblivion Remastered, while disregarding your regular settings. However, it’s quite a hassle at the moment, given that not only is the game Steam Deck verified, but it’s also supposed to be cloud save compatible.
Ideally, it should be straightforward for Bethesda to rectify the saving issue with Oblivion Remastered, so that the saved files are stored correctly. To be honest, I’m not tech-savvy enough to handle all this persistent file reorganization, and I’d rather avoid messing around with symbolic links if possible.
