The action-RPG titled “Elden Ring: Nightreign” is creating quite a buzz worldwide due to its innovative multiplayer approach, which builds upon the Soulslike gameplay style that’s well-loved. Not only does this game introduce captivating new characters that have quickly become fan favorites and instantly recognizable within the FromSoft catalog, but players also get to revisit some iconic boss battles from previous Dark Souls games, with Nightreign seamlessly integrating characters from different parts of the franchise for an exciting return in the latest edition. What might surprise some is that Nightreign isn’t just a tribute to Elden Ring and Dark Souls; Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice also makes an appearance, and more importantly, a playable class specifically designed for veterans of Sekiro provides a unique twist for those who decide to give Nightreign a go.
In contrast to other Soulslike games by FromSoftware, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice stands out with its unique character. Although some may point to the absence of RPG elements and the protagonist-centric focus as key differences between it and other FromSoft titles, the most noticeable change lies in its combat system. Unlike Elden Ring, which employs a more measured and deliberate approach to combat, Sekiro offers rapid, parry-intensive combat with a posture system. Essentially, the fast-paced action in Sekiro feels like it was drawn from a samurai film.
If you’re a fan of Sekiro and considering jumping into Elden Ring excitement, it might initially feel disheartening due to the genre’s reputation for being challenging. Often, the response to in-game difficulties is simply “get good,” which can be less than helpful when transitioning from combat mechanics in Sekiro to those in Elden Ring. But fear not, seasoned Sekiro players! A suitable match awaits you among Nightreign’s roster of playable characters.
The Executor, a samurai adorned with brass, arrives; this character, whose gender is unclear, is one I particularly admire within the game and is among my favorites.

The Executor shouts “samurai” in every conceivable manner, instantly appealing to fans who’ve spent countless hours mastering Sekiro. This character is introduced brandishing two katanas at his waist, hinting at a gameplay style reminiscent of the samurai starting origin found in the authentic Elden Ring.
Executor is a character who excels in using swift-striking weapons, particularly katanas, which are among the best dexterity weapons available throughout the game. This fast-paced, katana-wielding combat style could appeal to players who have enjoyed the Sekiro game, given that this character’s strong Arcana scaling causes bleed effects to stack up quickly and powerfully on enemy hits. A quick and dramatic blood loss burst on a boss can lead to an impressive end to a fight, much like in Sekiro.
While Executor might not be the primary reason for Sekiro fans to gravitate towards it, this class does boast a mechanism reminiscent of the game itself. In fact, it’s a tribute to Sekiro, as you can guess from its unique skill – the flawless block or perfect parry.

The Executor’s unique skill empowers a specific sword named Suncatcher. Drawing this enchanted blade reduces the Executor’s speed noticeably, but grants the power to deflect enemy attacks effectively, even against the toughest opponents. This is accomplished by timing the block command precisely. Successfully executing this maneuver completely nullifies any damage received and doesn’t deplete the stamina bar. Remarkably, this function closely resembles a mechanic that is exclusive to the game Sekiro.
This skill not only shields Executor from severe damage, but also empowers them to counterattack effectively. Once you’ve successfully blocked numerous strikes, you can launch a swift strike that releases the built-up energy in their sword towards adversaries.
Beyond just inflicting tremendous damage using Dexterity-enhanced katanas, Arcane-amplified hit effects like fire and bleeding, and the less discussed talent of transforming into a colossal demonic hound (yes, that’s possible too!), skilled players with extensive experience in Sekiro can also manipulate this versatile character to become an invincible master of parries, consistently deflecting devastating attacks before they cause any direct harm.
