As an ardent gaming enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement about my recent career move! Previously serving as a dedicated game director at Obsidian, I am thrilled to announce that I have joined the talented team at Night Dive Studios – the brilliant minds behind the critically acclaimed Oxenfree, and now under the umbrella of Netflix. Looking forward to the exciting journey ahead!
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I joyfully jumped into the world of Avowed when it debuted on both Xbox and PC in February. Critics hailed it as a triumph, but unfortunately, Microsoft, the company behind Obsidian Entertainment, has yet to disclose any figures about the game’s commercial performance.
Following its release, Patel expressed her desire for Obsidian to delve deeper into the realm of Avowed, which many interpret as a hint towards a potential sequel. In essence, she stated, “Now that we have created this captivating world and established a strong team dynamic in terms of content and gameplay within it, I’d be thrilled if we could explore it further.
Initially, Avowed was proposed as a game primarily focused on multiplayer, combining elements of Destiny and Skyrim. However, this was prior to Patel joining as the game’s director, who then guided the project through a significant shift in its development process.
Patel has been a part of Obsidian Entertainment for over a decade, where he played significant roles in the creation of games such as Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, as well as The Outer Worlds. Later on, he took up the position of Game Director for Avowed. Currently, Obsidian is busy with the development of The Outer Worlds 2, which is expected to hit the shelves by the end of this year.
Leaving Obsidian by Patel doesn’t automatically indicate the future of Avowed or any other projects. People often depart from their workplaces for a variety of personal reasons.
Although details about a possible sequel to Avowed are still unknown, developers at Obsidian are currently working on significant updates planned for both the summer and fall. These updates will bring features such as enhanced NPC capabilities and behaviors, along with a New Game Plus mode and a new photo mode.
Patel is joining Netflix during a period of transition and turbulence in the company’s gaming sector. Recently, Netflix closed its AAA game studio, and they have been concentrating more on mobile and social games. Nevertheless, Netflix’s top gaming executive emphasizes that achieving remarkable results requires patience, persistence, and investment.
There seems to be some uncertainty about which game project Patel is overseeing as game director at Netflix. Keep an eye on TopMob for updates.
