If Switch 2’s The Duskbloods Is a Hit After Elden Ring Nightreign, It Would be the End of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Era
It’s indisputable that Hidetaka Miyazaki has left a significant mark on contemporary gaming. He paved the way for the Souls genre, incorporating gameplay elements that have since shaped our understanding of video games as a whole. However, his continued influence might be waning, considering the recent operations at FromSoftware.
The most recent production of the studio, titled “Elden Ring Nightreign“, which is based on Hidetaka Miyazaki’s 2022 game, hasn’t been a big hit among fans during its initial release. However, with “The Duskbloods“, an exclusive for the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 in the pipeline, its performance could significantly influence Miyazaki’s future impact and FromSoftware’s objectives.
Hidetaka Miyazaki and the double-edged sword called The Duskbloods

Despite serving as the president of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki finds himself in a predicament. Previously mentioned, the fan reaction towards “Elden Ring Nightreign” has been divided, and now it falls upon “The Duskbloods” to uphold the studio’s reputation moving forward.
On the other hand, a challenge arises because if the new Nintendo Switch 2’s exclusive game gains popularity, it might lead Nintendo to prioritize multiplayer games consistently, which is not preferred by the Souls community. This concern has been addressed in the Creator’s Voice Blog by Nintendo, where the acclaimed director expressed this sentiment explicitly.
Previously, I noted that the game is fundamentally an online multiplayer title. However, this doesn’t imply that our company plans to focus solely on multiplayer games in the future. In fact, we have also announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, and we remain committed to creating single-player games like this one that reflect our traditional style.
FromSoftware’s president assures fans that although they are currently concentrating on multiplayer projects, they remain committed to continuously creating games with a strong focus on single-players. However, this commitment may not be sufficient to sway skeptical fans.
Capitalism rules over promises: Why fans are uncertain of FromSoftware’s future

Although Hidetaka Miyazaki may have pledged to uphold the studio’s core values, recent developments seem to suggest a different narrative. In a surprisingly swift period, FromSoftware is not only discussing but also actively developing not just one, but two distinct multiplayer games.
The creative team at the studio is considering different types of games they might delve into later on, which is typical for any game developer. Yet, venturing into multiplayer games isn’t a direction welcomed by fans of Souls series, including myself. We’ve witnessed the impact it has had on top-tier professionals, and indeed, I can’t help but think of Concord in this context.
Over the past few decades, Hidetaka Miyazaki has established a remarkable and unparalleled career. If his upcoming exclusive title for Switch 2 turns out to be a massive hit, it’s highly probable that FromSoftware, considering the desires of their stakeholders, will prioritize more multiplayer elements in future projects, whether or not this is something Miyazaki wants. This could potentially mark the end of an era for him.
