The 5th Dimension singer and founding member LaMonte McLemore died Tuesday of at the age of 90.
According to the Associated Press, vocalist McLemore passed away peacefully at his Las Vegas home following a stroke, according to a statement from his representative, Jeremy Westby. The cause of death was natural causes.
The band was known for combining pop and soul music, and they achieved success with songs like “Up, Up and Away” in 1967 and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” in 1969.
The album Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In, known for its songs from the musical Hair, topped the Billboard charts for six weeks.
Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo, married since 1969, shared a statement saying that everyone who knew and loved the person will deeply miss his lively spirit and great sense of humor.
Florence LaRue of the band shared that McLemore’s positive attitude and sense of humor were a source of support for her when she was facing challenges.
LaRue added, ‘We were more like brother and sister than singing partners.’
McLemore is remembered by his wife, Mieko, his children Ciara and Darin, his sister Joan, and three grandchildren.
