Hulu has cancelled a new series that would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar in her famous role. Gellar hopes fans won’t seek out the filmed pilot if it becomes available online, and she also wishes people wouldn’t read a leaked draft of the script.
So, I was listening to Sarah Michelle Gellar on SiriusXM with Evan Real, and she talked about the possibility of the Buffy pilot leaking. She really hopes it doesn’t, and she explained why. Basically, she said that pilot wasn’t a finished product and wouldn’t have been what the final show on Hulu would’ve looked like. It was still being worked on, and she emphasized that it would have gone through a lot of changes with rewrites and reshoots. It’s good to know they were still figuring things out, even at that stage!
Sarah Michelle Gellar Hopes the Pilot Never Leaks
I’m worried about information getting out before we’re ready, because then everyone will start forming opinions about things that aren’t finalized,” Gellar explained. “We hadn’t completed the season. It wasn’t like we finished filming and then decided not to continue. We intentionally created a pilot episode – and I want to be clear about that – because we were introducing new characters and wanted to test how they and the show were received.
As a film and TV buff, I’ve always found the pilot episode fascinating. What’s so interesting is that it’s rarely about getting it right the first time. It’s more about figuring things out. The original Buffy pilot, for example, was almost a completely different show! Different actors, different vibe – it barely resembled what we eventually got. That’s what pilots are for, really – a chance to learn and refine things before you actually air it. It’s a learning experience, a way to fix what doesn’t work, and ultimately, build something great.
The Leaked Script Is “Not Actually Correct”
Recently, a supposed script for the pilot episode of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot appeared online. Sarah Michelle Gellar has now commented, stating the script circulating isn’t accurate – it seems to be an old, early version that has changed significantly. She also asked fans to disregard any leaked scripts they find, explaining they won’t represent the final version of the show.
Gellar has acknowledged that an early draft of the script is circulating online, but clarified that it’s inaccurate. She’s asking fans to avoid watching any leaked versions, as they don’t reflect the creators’ intended story.
Sarah Michelle Gellar explained she spoke out about the show’s issues because she believes it deserves respect. She felt she needed to defend it when she didn’t see that respect being shown. Gellar suggested fans can best support the show now by continuing to stream Buffy and seeing her new movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
“That’s all we can do right now,” she said.
The early script for the planned series featured Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, only in a brief appearance at the very end. The pilot was initially considered too focused on a new, younger Slayer and felt too juvenile. While changes were made to mature the show and give Buffy a larger role, Hulu decided to cancel the project instead of continuing to invest in it.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming on Hulu.
