Hulu slays ‘Buffy’ sequel series, leaving fans disappointed yet hopeful for a revival

Hulu the “Buffy” reboot slayer?

Disney+ has cancelled the planned revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” just a year after star Sarah Michelle Gellar announced it was happening. Gellar shared the disappointing news with fans in a short Instagram video, calling the cancellation “really sad.” She was going to be an executive producer on the show, which was tentatively named “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao was set to direct.

Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed her surprise at revisiting her role as Buffy, saying she was happily reminded of her affection for the character – and how much Buffy means to her fans – thanks to Chloé. She emphasized that recent events haven’t changed those feelings.

She added: “I promise if the apocalypse actually comes you can still beep me.”

When Sarah Michelle Gellar announced the show’s departure from streaming, a Los Angeles resident named Bren O’Brien organized a protest. On Monday, O’Brien rallied outside Hulu’s offices in Santa Monica, displaying signs asking the company to change its mind. One sign, bright red with black lettering, simply shouted “Bring Buffy Back!!” Another featured a picture of Gellar and declared, “Canceling Buffy Isn’t smart, the world needs a hero!”

“I’m really sad. This was a moment that I’ve been waiting decades for,” O’Brien said.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, known for her role in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ has confirmed that a reboot of the series is being planned. She assured fans that they will only move forward with it if they can maintain the quality of the original.

After years of thought, Sarah Michelle Gellar has given the go-ahead for Hulu to start making a sequel to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The cast for the first episode was put together last year, and Gellar has stated they’ll only proceed if they can deliver a quality show.

Though the actress known for “Buffy” didn’t explain the cancellation in her recent social media post, she told reporters at the 2026 Academy Awards that she expected Hulu to make that choice.

I really enjoyed working with Sarah and the entire team on this project. We feel a strong responsibility to honor the original show. Staying true to the source material and respecting our fans has always been our top priority. We believe everything happens for a reason and we’re open to whatever the future holds.”

I was really bummed to see the show get canceled, and so was Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the actress who was going to play the new slayer alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. She posted a picture of herself in costume on Instagram with the caption, ‘Your slayer,’ which just felt so sad and final. It’s a shame we won’t get to see her take on the role.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired in 1997 on the WB and continued until 2001, then moved to UPN where it finished in 2003. A spin-off series, Angel, ran from 1999 to 2004 on the WB. While there have been attempts to revive Buffy in recent years, they haven’t been successful. In addition, several actors have recently accused the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, of inappropriate behavior.

Prime Video’s new series, “Scarpetta,” brings Patricia Cornwell’s well-known forensic investigator to the screen for the very first time, with Nicole Kidman and Rosy McEwen taking on the lead role.

Following the announcement that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” wouldn’t be continuing on Hulu, fans expressed their disappointment online, largely criticizing the streaming service’s choice. Hulu has not yet publicly commented on the situation.

O’Brien, like many fans, was upset about the cancellation and immediately started sharing his disappointment online. He made posters and promoted a rally to protest the decision. He was particularly surprised by Hulu’s choice, noting that “Buffy” is a well-loved show with a dedicated fanbase that spans multiple generations, making it a valuable asset.

“It’s just a no-brainer,” he added.

Another “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fan, Erin McClory, joined the protest outside Hulu’s offices, holding a sign with a broken heart pierced by a wooden stake. She expressed hope that the show’s devoted fanbase could convince Hulu to change its mind about canceling the series, or encourage another streaming service to revive it.

Miley Cyrus hinted she might revisit her role as ‘Hannah Montana’ for a Disney+ special commemorating the show’s 20th anniversary, which will be available on March 24th.

“It seems crazy for them to not even give it a chance,” she said.

Both O’Brien and McClory have expressed continued enthusiasm for “Buffy” and are open to seeing more content in the future, while still remaining strong supporters of the original show.

O’Brien said they’ll continue posting Buffy edits on social media, but admitted with a sigh that they really want to create some new content.
