Amazon Web Services – you know, the invisible backbone that keeps the internet functioning like a well-oiled machine – recently experienced a massive crash. And when AWS hiccups, well, it’s like watching a Jenga tower collapse. The fallout? Coinbase, Disney, Zoom, Snapchat, Signal, McDonald’s (yes, even your french fries) all went into a full-on digital panic. With AWS gobbling up 32% of the global cloud market, it’s no wonder the chaos spread faster than a TikTok dance trend. And yes, crypto got caught in the crossfire too. 😬
But wait. Enter XRP Ledger. While the internet was turning into a digital dumpster fire, XRP just kept chugging along like a caffeinated squirrel on a mission. The ever-helpful “Vet,” an XRP enthusiast who sounds like someone you’d follow down a rabbit hole, pointed out how this decentralized network shrugged off the AWS debacle. AWS might have been dropping the ball, but XRP was out here playing the Super Bowl in a rainstorm. 🏆
Right now, there are somewhere between 120-150 validators keeping the XRP Ledger running, and many of them are using AWS. Along with Google Cloud, Hetzner, and DigitalOcean-basically all the usual suspects. But don’t forget the lone wolves who run on their own independent servers. The real MVPs. 👏
Is Cypherpunk Dead? Who Cares, Let’s Talk Decentralization
Let’s address the elephant in the room: decentralization. It’s like the grumpy old uncle of the crypto world. He was once the life of the party, but now he’s just grumbling about how everything’s too centralized. The dream of a private, independent payment system (cue the cypherpunk anthem) isn’t exactly at the forefront anymore. Now we’re all sitting in the cloud, hosted by the big guys like AWS, Google, and – let’s be honest – whoever else is out there charging us to keep our digital lives afloat. ☁️
But hold your horses – XRP Ledger is not going quietly into the night. Forget privacy for a moment (yes, it still has that), the real flex here is its resilience. When the internet itself is taking a nap, XRP Ledger keeps rolling like an unbothered train. That’s why the XLS-50d proposal has come back to life – because it’s time to talk about how strong decentralization can be when the cloud providers drop the ball. ⚡
Despite AWS having issues, the XRP Ledger is closing blocks normally.
That’s the hard work of decentralization, especially geographical and hosting wise.
Though I believe we can do much better and increase resilience – XLS 50 is important for this transparency to drive action.

So what is XLS-50d exactly? Well, it’s a fancy proposal that’s all about transparency. Validators should share more about where they are (physically and digitally), so no one’s piling into the same cloud or data center. Think of it as a digital spread-out strategy: spread across different providers and countries. And if a chunk of validators suddenly disappear (looking at you, AWS), consensus pauses for a quick 12-20 minutes – just enough time for the backup systems to take over and for you to refresh your Twitter feed. ⏳
Let’s Talk Consensus: When the Cloud Crashes, Decentralization Saves the Day
It’s not the end of the world, but it’s certainly not ideal. AWS going down gave us a real-world demo of what happens when centralized systems fail. Coinbase? Offline. XRPL? Still chugging along, with validators spread across multiple hosts like a well-cooked Thanksgiving turkey. 🦃
Bitcoin and Ethereum, bless their hearts, have also dealt with centralization concerns. Bitcoin’s hashrate? More than 30% of it is now based in the U.S. Ethereum’s staking? Dominated by Lido and big cloud operators. But XRP Ledger’s uptime during the outage? It’s proof that a well-distributed network is a tougher cookie to crumble. 🍪
