I was really surprised to hear that Kit Harington won’t be returning as Eret in the next How to Train Your Dragon movie! It’s cool that the franchise is bringing characters to life in live-action, but it’s a shame he’s being replaced. I was hoping to see him reprise the role!
The actor known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Eternals first voiced a character in the 2014 film How to Train Your Dragon 2, and then returned to play the same character in the 2019 sequel, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Although fans were hoping he’d be back, it’s now official: he won’t be in the second movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phil Dunster, known for his role in Ted Lasso, will be taking over the part.

Eret, who captures dragons in the story, isn’t the only character being played by a new actor in the upcoming movie. According to Deadline, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will now voice the character of Bludvist, taking over from Djimon Hounsou.
Okay, so I was stoked to hear Cate Blanchett is coming back as Valka! She plays Hiccup’s mom, who everyone thought was gone for good, but then she showed up and it was awesome. Glad she’s returning for more!

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Hiccup and his friends face a new threat: the warlord Drago, who is building a massive dragon army to take over the world.
Last year’s first live-action movie in the series brought back Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, a character he originally played in the animated films. Newcomer Mason Thames starred as Hiccup, and the film also featured Nico Parker, Nick Frost, and Julian Dennison.
The movie received positive reviews from critics when it came out. They liked that it stayed true to the original animated version while also having its own unique look and feel. Currently, 77% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it a positive rating, based on 261 reviews.

Despite potentially being an unnecessary remake, the film still tells a wonderful story. According to Movie Mom, it’s heartwarming, visually impressive, and explores themes of courage in a meaningful way.
According to NPR, Toothless remains incredibly charming, and the aerial scenes and scenery are stunning. The movie does focus a bit too much on minor dragons attacking Vikings – but the original film did the same thing.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to be released in 2027.
