In the game Avowed, you’ll find an array of weapons and fighting techniques at your disposal, ranging from sharp daggers to magical grimoires. If, like many others, you prefer hand-to-hand combat, you might be curious about mastering the parry move in Avowed, enabling you to set up a counter-attack on your adversaries.
It appears that Parry isn’t immediately accessible when you embark on your journey through the Living Lands. Rather, you’ll find a way to activate this ability during your gameplay.
Unlocking Parry in Avowed
You can acquire the skill called Parry by progressing through the Ranger’s skill tree. This particular skill is positioned as the third one in the top row. To activate its use, allocate one of your skill points when you reach the required level.
As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that Parry, my go-to tool in this game, has room for improvement! You can boost its power not just once, but twice. Plus, there’s an extra skill to unlock that will enhance your ability to deflect incoming projectiles, making gameplay even more exciting! Here’s a rundown of all the upgrades and that nifty additional skill you won’t want to miss.
- Parry Rank 2: Increases parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies.
- Parry Rank 3: Increases parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies.
- Arrow Deflection: This ability requires you to have unlocked Parry and to have reached level 10. This allows melee weapons to block arrows or similar projectiles when parrying.
How to parry attacks in Avowed
Once the ability is activated, you now have the option to deflect some enemy attacks. However, if an enemy flashes red before or during their assault sequence, it cannot be blocked or parried. If an enemy has a yellow circle (or no circle) surrounding them, wait until they lunge forward during their attack animation. Time your LT or RMB press precisely with the onset of the incoming strike and you’ll successfully block the attack and momentarily stun the foe.
The positive aspect here is that the ‘parry window’ provides ample time for response. Unlike Souls-like games, precise timing down to the millisecond isn’t essential. Based on my playthrough, if you press LT or RMB while an enemy is attacking you with their weapon, you should successfully parry their attack effectively.
This provides an opportunity for you to deliver a couple of strikes, which in turn fills the ‘Stun’ meter below the enemy’s health gauge. Filling this meter enables you to execute ‘special’ moves that inflict heavy damage.
Mastering parrying is essential if you’re keen on melee combat in Avowed, especially since it boosts stun inflicted on enemies as you advance its ranks. Additionally, promptly enhancing your Arrow Deflection skill can protect you from minor damage caused by ranged attacks when battling numerous foes simultaneously.
