How to mount in MH Wilds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can ride a giant beast by jumping onto its back from a high spot, followed by a jumping attack with any of your weapons. However, each monster has an unseen gauge that fills up for this action, so it can’t be done repeatedly if the gauge isn’t full yet. When the gauge isn’t filled, jumping attacks won’t result in mounting.
In Monster Hunter World, the method for building up the mounting gauge isn’t explicitly explained in-game, but based on community understanding, you can increase it by striking an enemy with similar jumping attacks that enable mounting.
Gradually, it accumulates, but don’t anticipate taking down the same formidable foe more than twice during a single expedition. It’s also worth noting that melee-centric players wielding weapons such as the Monster Hunter Long Sword in the Wilds will probably execute these special moves more frequently.
Mounting explained
When you ride a monster in Monster Hunter World, the situation becomes more intricate. Here’s a brief explanation of the process:
1. First, you need to trap the monster using traps or tranq bombs.
2. After it is weakened, you can mount it by attacking its back or specific body parts indicated by the game.
3. Once mounted, you can deal extra damage, stun the monster, or perform special attacks.
4. Be careful not to fall off the monster as it can cause damage and give it an opportunity to retaliate.
5. After enough damage is dealt or the time runs out, you’ll automatically dismount.
6. Repeat these steps until the monster is defeated.
- You can reposition yourself along its body with the analog stick to move around.
- You can perform light and heavy knife attacks on the section of the body you’re holding onto with Circle and Triangle (PS5), or B and Y (Xbox).
- You can also hit it with your equipped weapon using R1/RB.
- If the monster tries to shake you off, the screen will darken. Press R2/RT to brace yourself and hold on, or move quickly to a new section of body. Either should let you hold on.
- Once you’ve damaged a section of the monster’s body for long enough, it will open a wound. Hit the wounded area with either a Weapon Attack or Heavy Knife Attack to do massive damage with a finisher and dismount.
In my experience, you don’t really need a knife attack during gameplay; instead, focus on utilizing your weapon and R1/RB strikes as they deliver more forceful blows. Additionally, this presents an excellent opportunity for fellow players to join the fray since the monster can still inflict damage while thrashing around, but it won’t execute significant moves while mounted.
