If you’d like to make Avowed more challenging (or less difficult) or enhance your gameplay experience in some ways, consider giving player-created mods a try. The process of installing these mods should be straightforward if you have prior experience with modding games, but for those who are new to this, here’s a simple guide to help get you started.

How to Use Mods in Avowed

Currently, there isn’t any official modding support available for Avowed, so users can’t develop content such as equipment, companions, or maps. Nevertheless, creators on the Avowed Nexusmods page have begun sharing Quality-of-Life mods that enhance different aspects of the game. Fortunately, these mods are straightforward to install, and the installation process is compatible with both the Steam and Game Pass versions of Avowed.

  1. Download any mod.
  2. Extract mod files to your installation folder (Avowed/Alabama/Paks/~mods)
  3. Run the game.

In the realm of user-friendly enhancements for my Avowed adventure, all I need to do is transfer the contents of these mods into a ‘mods’ folder nestled within the main installation directory (shouldn’t be there already, go ahead and make it if it isn’t). To swiftly navigate to the game’s installation hub, here’s my preferred method: dive right into the installation folder itself.

Steam Installation Directory

  1. Right-click Avowed in your Steam Library.
  2. Click “Browse Local Files.”

Xbox Game Pass

  1. Right-click Avowed in your Game Pass library.
  2. Select “Manage.”
  3. Click “Browse” on the upper portion of the window that appears.

If the mod for ‘Avowed’ receives community support, it’s advisable to install any additional .pak mods in a similar manner. This approach is commonly followed when dealing with contemporary games built using the Unreal Engine.

Installing Engine Tweaks

If you’re encountering performance issues with the game Avowed and are finding it hard to achieve a satisfactory frame rate, consider adjusting your engine settings. The tweaked files usually alter parameters beyond what the in-game options menu offers. To install these tweaks is as straightforward as setting up the mods mentioned earlier, but remember to place the files in a separate folder instead.

  • Steam: AppData/Local/Alabama/Saved/Config/Windows
  • Game Pass: AppData/Local/Alabama/Saved/Config/WinGDK

1. Save a copy of the current Engine.ini file before replacing it with the one you downloaded, in case any issues arise.

2. After saving the backup, replace the original .ini file with the new one.

3. To keep the game from overwriting your custom settings, make the Engine.ini file read-only by right-clicking on it, selecting Properties, and then checking the Read-Only box at the bottom of the window. This setting can be found in the properties dialog.

You have the option to personalize these modified Engine.ini files as per your preference by using a program like Notepad or any text editor. However, it may be challenging to make changes if you’re not familiar with how Unreal Engine 5 operates.
