A24’s new movie, How to Make a Killing, comes out on February 20th, and the first reviews are starting to appear. A24 has had a great year so far, with films like The Moment gaining a lot of attention and doing well at the box office. Pillion, released earlier this month, also earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, early reviews suggest How to Make a Killing might not be as successful, based on its current Rotten Tomatoes rating.
John Patton Ford’s new film, How to Make a Killing, follows Becket Redfellow (played by Glen Powell), a man cut off from his incredibly rich family who starts eliminating relatives to claim the entire Redfellow fortune. Ford previously directed Emily the Criminal in 2022, a debut feature that gained attention after premiering at Sundance. As of now, How to Make a Killing has a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 39 reviews, indicating that critics have had a mixed reaction to the movie.
Many viewers have commented that the script, also written by the director, holds the film back from being truly great. While the story of the main character’s rise within his family is enjoyable, some noticeable gaps in the plot prevent it from reaching its full potential. Surprisingly, these issues also hinder the talented cast from delivering even stronger performances.
‘How to Make a Killing’ Has Fallen Short of Expectations

Many positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes highlight the film’s dark humor and satirical story, which echoes a trend seen in recent movies. Like Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, this film tackles issues of capitalism and class differences, with a plot involving competition and even murder. However, critics didn’t seem to connect with the themes in How to Make a Killing as strongly as they did with Park Chan-wook’s work.

The new film How to Make a Killing has a surprisingly different reception on Rotten Tomatoes compared to director John Ford’s first movie, Emily the Criminal. While Emily the Criminal, starring Aubrey Plaza, received a strong 93% positive rating – lauded as a thrilling and socially relevant story – How to Make a Killing hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations. Despite Ford aiming to explore similar social issues, the script didn’t fully deliver. If reviews remain mixed, this Glen Powell film could be the first A24 release of the year to receive a negative score on Rotten Tomatoes.
