What is the Umbra Sword in Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered?
In the game Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, Umbra is a longsword designed for one-handed combat. It’s particularly effective in dealing damage and has an additional feature: it can fill soul gems. When you deliver the final blow with this weapon, it activates the Soul Trap spell. This spell, belonging to the Mysticism school of magic, allows you to capture a soul to fill a soul gem. Later, you can use these filled soul gems to recharge your magical weapons. There’s a 120-second cool down on this effect.
Choosing Umbra is beneficial for close combat builds since it eliminates the need to cast spells for filling soul gems. Instead, your sword takes care of that, provided you have a suitable empty gem on hand.

How to Get the Umbra Sword in Oblivion Remastered? Explained
To obtain the Umbra sword in Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, you must vanquish a Wood Elf warrior called Umbra located within the Vindasel ruin, to the southwest of the Imperial City. This powerful Level 50 adversary can prove challenging to conquer. However, you can seize the Umbra sword prematurely by employing a technique that lures her into the city, where guards will engage and slay her on your behalf. If you are of lower level, remember to carry healing potions or restoration spells for support during your expedition.
Step 1- Find and Enter Vindasel
To reach the Ayleid ruin Vindasel most swiftly, you can first teleport (fast travel) to the Imperial City’s Waterfront, a small peninsula located southwest of the city. After leaving through the entrance, dive into the water and swim southwest across it towards Vindasel.
As you get near the front door, it’s advisable to pause before entering if there are two magicians standing guard. Failing to do so might cause complications for you further down the line.
Stepping into Vindasel, I can assure you that the majority of the rats you’ll encounter are quite manageable. However, beware! The first substantial room comes with a floor spike trap, while the second one hides a poisonous surprise. Press on, determined to reach the heart of this ruin where Umbra lies. A single strike will provoke her. Then, without delay, turn tail and sprint back through the ruin, making a swift exit through the door.
Step 2- Run to the Imperial City Talos Plaza District
Following this, your plan is to head northwards alongside the lake until you reach a bridge that directly leads east towards Talos Plaza District in the Imperial City. Maintain Umbra’s attention as she should follow you into the open world beyond. Given that your Speed and Athletics aren’t exceptionally high, it’s unlikely that you can outrun her.
Follow the shoreline northward by the lake, occasionally glancing at your map for guidance. As you spot the linking bridge, cross it and hasten towards the city’s entrance.
In the end, upon entering, make your way straight ahead past the initial group of guards towards the plaza featuring a dragon statue. Stand there and circumnavigate the statue. Await a moment, as numerous guards will charge towards Umbra to engage in combat. Evade her if she attacks you, and allow the guards to handle the situation.
Once Umbra passes away, you’ll have the opportunity to collect her Ebony-armored self, including the Umbra sword. Just remember to approach with caution, perhaps by crouching down first, to ensure it’s not considered theft. If there’s a chance it is, wait for an opportune moment when no one’s looking to claim your rewards. However, it’s likely that it isn’t, but always better to be safe than sorry!
How to Use the Umbra Sword in ESOR?
To effectively wield the Umbra sword in Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, it’s recommended to arm it with any melee class that excels in Blade as a primary skill. These classes encompass Acrobat, Archer, Assassin, Barbarian, Bard, Battlemage, Crusader, Knight, Nightblade, Rogue, Scout, Spellsword, and Warrior. Keep in mind that some builds for these classes may prioritize other weapon types according to your preferred playstyle. Nevertheless, the Barbarian, Battlemage, Crusader, Knight, Spellsword, and Warrior classes are particularly suitable for utilizing the Umbra sword.
Furthermore, for optimal use of the Umbra sword, it’s essential to have some empty soul gems ready. If not, the Soul Trap bonus might be wasted. These soul gems can later be utilized to replenish the sword or to craft enchanted items.
Tips and Tricks for Umbra Sword in Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered
Here’s a helpful guide on locating and utilizing the Umbra Sword in The Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion Remastered:
1. Head to Bruma, a city located in the heart of Cyrodiil, and speak with Lysynda the Witch at her house, which is near the Temple of the One. She’ll ask you for a favor involving a bandit named Kain.
2. Accept the quest and venture to Kain’s hideout in the Bruma Sewers. Defeat Kain and his minions, then search the area for the Umbra Sword.
3. Once obtained, you can use the Umbra Sword like any other weapon. However, it has a unique ability: when equipped, your character will be able to see and interact with ghostly figures in the world of Oblivion. This can help uncover hidden secrets or clues!
- You can also stay inside Vindasel and try to use the spike trap to kill Umbra. However, this strategy didn’t work very well for us, the spikes didn’t seem to deal much damage.
- If you wait until you are Level 15 to get the Umbra sword, it will have better stats, than if you acquire the sword earlier.
- However, Umbra is a great early game sword and you can acquire it as early as Level 1. Furthermore, a Level 1 Umbra sword and a Level 14 Umbra sword will have the same stats.
- Umbra is part of the Clavicus Vile quest, and you will need to turn it over to receive the Masque of Clavicus Vile. However, you can refuse to do so (or just never visit the altar) and keep the sword.
