In Monster Hunter Wilds, players have multiple methods to engage with the monsters’ destructive abilities. One of these methods is by executing Offset Attacks. These potent techniques can help you counter monstrous attacks and create an opportunity for a retaliatory strike. Familiarizing yourself with its intricacies and perfecting this skill will be crucial in defeating formidable foes like Arkveld using your preferred weapon.

What is Offset Attack? Explained

In simpler terms, the Offset Attack is a defensive maneuver assigned to certain weapons that have fewer evasive options compared to others like the Long Sword, Dual Blades, and Insect Glaive. This move bears resemblance to the Power Clash mechanic of shielded weapons, but it can only be executed by specific types of weapons within Monster Hunter Wilds.

  • Great Sword.
  • Heavy Bowgun.
  • Switch Axe.
  • Hammer.
  • Hunting Horn.

In contrast to Power Clash that’s activated by thwarting a specific move, Offset Attack serves the purpose of deflecting all monsters’ melee assaults. Achieving an Offset guarantees a ‘super armor’ benefit, shielding you from any harm. This feature is ineffective when a monster launches a projectile or ranged attack like Balahara’s mudblast or Rey Dau’s railgun.

By using counterattacks called Offset Strikes when blocking attacks, you’ll accumulate an unseen ‘Offset Impact.’ Accumulate enough Offset Impact, and your enemy will stumble or even fall over. The more potent the move you block with an Offset Strike, the greater the Offset Impact you’ll inflict, frequently causing monsters to tumble down.

How to Perform Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds

To carry out an effective Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s crucial that the Offset Attack aligns with a monster’s attack. In simpler terms, you need to time your actions correctly, because the Offset Attack may include a preliminary windup animation or moves before it can be fully executed. This is different from Perfect Guard or Power Clash as the guarding animation happens instantly.

  • Great Sword: Offset Rising Slash.
    • Input: Y/Triangle/Left Click + B/O/Right Click.
    • Can be charged up to Level 3 like Charged Slash and released early.
  • Heavy Bowgun: Wyverncounter Ignition.
    • Input:
      1. B/O/Right Click (Ignition Mode).
      2. LT/L2/Mouse 3 + Y/Triangle/Left Click (Wyverncounter Ignition).
    • Must be in Ignition Mode first.
    • Can be charged and released early.
  • Switch Axe: Axe Mode: Offset Rising Slash.
    • Input: Y/Triangle/Left Click + B/O/Right Click.
    • Must be in Axe Mode; Sword Mode doesn’t have an Offset Attack move.
  • Hammer: Upswing.
    • Input:
      1. Y/Triangle/Left Click.
      2. Y/Triangle/Left Click.
      3. Y/Triangle/Left Click, this part is the Upswing move.
    • Takes time to perform as it is a combo ender.
  • Hunting Horn: Offset Melody.
    • Notes: Yellow, Red, Yellow, White.
    • Input:
      1. Y/Triangle/Left Click + B/O/Right Click (Yellow note).
      2. B/O/Right Click (Red note).
      3. Y/Triangle/Left Click + B/O/Right Click (Yellow note).
      4. Y/Triangle/Left Click (White note).
      5. Y/Triangle/Left Click + B/O/Right Click + RT/R2/R key (Offset Melody).
    • Save the melody first then perform it while the monster is winding up its attack.

Many weapons can follow an Offset action with a quick Y/Triangle/Left Click sequence, similar to the Great Sword’s Follow-Up Cross Slash. A Hunter can bridge the distance to a downed monster by using the Slinger and swiftly attacking with rapid strikes.

The Hunting Horn doesn’t carry on combos once it knocks down a monster, making it unique in this regard. To optimize its usage, consider stockpiling melodies prior to executing an Offset Attack. This will allow you to use the lull between attacks to boost your teammates or perform an Echo Wave during downtime.
