How To Defeat the Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign (Adel, Baron of Night)?
Discover details on the battle against The Gaping Jaw, also known as Adel, the Knight of Maiden, in Elden Ring: learn about its vulnerabilities, strategies for victory, and additional insights.
In Elden Ring Nightreign, the second character you unlock following the defeat of Tricephalos, known as Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night), is often considered among the toughest boss battles. While it follows Tricephalos, Gaping Jaw proves to be much more challenging than most other opponents in the game, even surpassing the difficulty level of the final boss.
Despite having a relatively basic set of moves, this formidable creature deals massive damage and recovers swiftly from being staggered, making it a significant threat. To add to its intimidating presence, Adel, Night’s Baron, boasts an impressive amount of health. Even with the Bleed effect, it takes considerable time and effort to lower its HP, all while avoiding the boss’s relentless attacks.
Fortunately, there are numerous strategies to lessen the challenge when confronting Adel, the Nightreign’s Gaping Jaw, aka the Baron of Night, in Elden Ring. This guide will provide you with an easy approach to overcome him using either elemental weapons or a well-balanced party setup.
Overview of Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign
After you conquer Gladius (Tricephalos) for the first time, Adel, Knight of the Night, will be ready to join your fight. This ominous being appears dragon-like and seems to have emerged from the night itself, now eager to devour anything in its path. Despite a striking resemblance to Dark Souls’ Gaping Dragon, this creature is distinctly unique.
To begin with, Adel, unlike the Gaping Dragon, boasts exceptional agility and can harness the power of lightning. In addition, this boss character is heavily armored all over, with its head and hind legs being the vulnerable points. Lastly, it’s worth noting that Adel, Knight of Darkness, is susceptible to poison unlike the Gaping Dragon.
Indeed, when you’re equipped with weapons that possess the Poison attribute, you can certainly dominate the boss during the initial stage. Applying Poison temporarily weakens the boss by lowering its defenses. But beware, as the fight progresses into its second phase, Adel becomes more resistant to Poison, making the battle noticeably tougher.
Moreover, unlike some other Nightlords, Adel stands out for his resistance to being staggered. The boss exhibits remarkable agility, making it difficult to inflict much damage on him unless you’re wielding the Recluse or Ironeye.
Weaknesses of the Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night)
Adel is mainly vulnerable to Poison, as suggested by the game, but during our tests, Bleed proved to be the most potent element against the boss. You can also dominate the boss with Scarlet Rot or Frostbite, but inflicting Poison on the Gaping Jaw provides short windows for dealing damage, which is beneficial in the initial phase.
During the second stage, you won’t have the ability to apply Poison to the boss because it has higher agility and poison resistance in this phase. Besides dealing elemental damage, Adel can also be put into a vulnerable stance; however, achieving this requires using Colossal Weapons along with passive buffs that boost poise damage.
In summary, for a melee battle against the boss, the optimal picks among the Nightfarers would be either the Raider or the Wylder.
Tips To Easily Defeat the Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night)
Here are some tips that should help you easily defeat the Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign:
- At the start of the battle, Adel always does a 3-hit ground slam combo. As such, it’s best to keep your distance from the boss at the start. However, if you have your character skill and ultimate arts gauge maxed out, we recommend heading straight to the boss and using them. You get I-frames while performing a skill or an ultimate.
- If you’re using poison, make sure to keep an eye on the boss’s HP bar. Once Adel is poisoned, we recommend staying at a medium distance as poisoning forces Adel to vomit a poisonous substance, which, while it staggers the boss, can also eat away at your own HP.
- With a ranged character in the party, you can constantly apply Poison on the boss, while tanks and melee characters can keep it distracted. The best party composition for the Gaping Jaw is Raider, Guardian, and Ironeye. You can replace Guardian with Wylder; however, make sure to have at least 2 tanks in your party.
- Also, while locking onto Adel, keep the camera on the boss’s limbs, instead of its head or body. Additionally, always keep an eye on Adel’s head. If the boss’s head retracts, unlock the camera and run to a medium distance. This essentially is a telegraph for the boss’s grab attack, which also causes Blood Loss.
- Lastly, when you see Adel summoning lightning, simply head to the edge of the arena as fast as you can. Staying close to the boss while it summons the lightning shower can easily deplete your HP bar in the blink of an eye. You can also use Guardian’s shield or Raider’s totem to avoid getting hit by the lightning AOE.
Additional Notes
Another suitable option for your party setup is to consider characters such as Raider, Revenant, and Recluse. Contrary to appearances, the Revenant can be just as effective at tanking bosses as the Raider or Wylder. However, it’s essential to note that the Revenant character possesses a much steeper learning curve compared to other Nightfarers.
