How To Break All Barriers And Activate All Switches In Avowed
In the game Avowed, when a pathway or area seems blocked, it’s often shielded by one of several breakable obstacles that might take some time to decipher initially. Interestingly, there are six distinct types of breakable barriers in Avowed, and learning how to handle each is crucial for unrestricted exploration.
Five out of the six challenges can be handled independently, but be mindful that you’ll need to be well-prepared. The sixth challenge, however, requires a partner for navigating it. Fortunately, partners can assist with most of the other challenges as well. By following this guide, you’ll gain valuable insights into overcoming these challenges in the Living Lands – and how to do so effectively!
Wooden Barriers – Marked With Swords
The initial obstacle is quite straightforward; you might not even require our assistance for it. However, the title of the article is The Complete Guide, not The Mostly Complete Guide With Some Pieces You Can Figure Out On Your Own, so here we are. Any barricade marked with a sword (typically wooden slats), can be easily destroyed by attacking it. Task accomplished.
The first hurdle is simple enough that you might not need us for it. The title of the article is The Complete Guide, not The Mostly Complete Guide With Some Pieces You Can Figure Out On Your Own, so we’re here. Any obstacle marked with a sword (usually wooden slats), can be easily destroyed by attacking it. Job done.
Breakable Walls – Marked With Explosions

The more challenging close-combat obstacles are often represented as crumbling walls, missing a few bricks here and there, and labeled with an explosion symbol. These can be demolished by performing a powerful attack (fully charging before releasing) with a melee weapon, but only if you’ve acquired the upgrade “Built To Destroy” from the Fighter skill tree.
Webbing/Brambles – Marked With Flames
As an enthusiastic player of Avowed, I’ve found that when you stumble upon obstacles like webbing or assorted barriers in the game, they will bear a distinctive flame symbol if they can be eliminated. To get rid of them, you’ll need to set them ablaze, and fortunately, there are three ways to do so:
1. Use a flamethrower if available.
2. If you have fire magic, cast a spell.
3. Find an environmental source of fire and ignite the obstacle with it.
- Use Kai’s Firestarter ability
- Use a fire spell
- Throw a flaming projectile like Magran’s Fury
Iron Gates – Marked With Snowflake

If you come across iron gates bearing a snowflake emblem, it indicates they’re destructible as well. You can break them by making them freeze solid until the metal splits apart. An icy missile like Eye of Rymrgand is suitable for this task, but if you don’t have one handy, simply cast any Frost spell at your disposal. Unfortunately, none of your allies can assist with spells in this instance.
Power Switches – Marked With Lightning Bolts

At times, what appear to be insurmountable obstacles may simply be locked doors waiting for the right key – or rather, a power switch in this case. A door labeled “Door with a lock” often means it needs a power source before it can open. You’ll notice an orange shield above it, or perhaps some visible metal wiring. Follow the path of this wiring until you find a gold button, which might be hidden through a small crack in a wall. By directing electricity at this button, you can activate the switch and unlock the door. This can be achieved…
- Through Giatta’s Spectral Jolt ability
- With a Shock spell
- By throwing an Electric Lily Seed
Pink Barriers – Marked With A Swirl

The most difficult obstacle you’ll encounter is one that radiates a distinct pink hue. This could be a peculiar pink panel situated above an entrance, or it might be boulders exuding an eerie pink essence. Regardless of their form, they are immovable by your own strength, as none of your spells have any effect on them. To overcome this obstacle, you’ll need to enlist the help of Yatzli in Shatterscarp and utilize her Dispel Illusion ability to either shift the rocks or dismantle the barrier.
