Get ready for a new Resident Evil movie! Director Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, has revealed which game from the series inspired this standalone story, promising plenty of thrilling horror.
The screenplay for the film is a collaboration between Cregger and Shay Hatten, who previously worked on the John Wick films and Ballerina. This movie is a fresh start for the Resident Evil video game series, and it reunites Cregger with Austin Abrams (from Weapons), who plays the main character, Bryan, a medical courier.
While making a delivery during a snowstorm, Bryan is forced to stop at a remote house due to an emergency. The first trailer shows him entering the house – a decision that quickly proves to be a mistake – and searching for a phone. Things rapidly worsen from there, and the bloody preview suggests a terrifying experience for Bryan.

While on the set in Prague, director and writer Cregger told GamesRadar he’s answered a question many Resident Evil fans have been asking. He explained that his movie takes place on the edges of the story told in the second game.
He asked for a story set at the same time as the events in Raccoon City, but focusing on different people and what they were experiencing.
Production designer Tom Hammock explained that the city’s design was heavily influenced by the look and feel of the video game Resident Evil 2.

The set design featured a lot of brickwork, interesting textures, and simulated rain. The main adjustment we made was to increase the amount of snow. We were also lucky enough to discover a location that perfectly resembled the police station – it was right near the Opera House, which was a great find!

This new Resident Evil movie, described by the director as straightforward and focused, will visually capture the feel of the games, using immersive first-person perspectives. It will include many nods to the game series, but you don’t need to be a fan to enjoy the film.
He explained that references to the games will likely be lost on viewers unfamiliar with them, and he avoids dwelling on details exclusive to the games. While the movie’s rhythm closely mirrors that of the games, those who haven’t played them probably won’t notice this connection.
Viewers who are familiar with the Resident Evil games seem to be enjoying the direction Cregger has taken with the film. One YouTube commenter, who was initially worried about the addition of humor and deviations from the established story, said the teaser looked “amazing” and predicted the movie would be excellent, even if it doesn’t perfectly match the games.
Many viewers noticed the unsettling sound of an old-fashioned telephone ring throughout the video, and how it gets faster as Bryan records a long voicemail message.
Okay, so I was checking out the trailer, and someone pointed out the heartbeat sound they used – it totally slaps! Seriously, I never expected to hear a landline phone’s pulse used in a horror trailer like that, but it’s actually really cool and adds to the vibe.
Resident Evil is released in cinemas on 18 September.
