Even though John Dutton died unexpectedly at the end of Yellowstone, his character will still be felt in the new series focusing on his family.
In the final season of Yellowstone, Kevin Costner’s character, John, was killed as part of a planned murder.
John Dutton’s legacy is first seen in the premiere of ‘Marshals,’ the new series that focuses on his son, Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL.
While serving in the military, Kayce (Luke Grimes) didn’t seem to readily share his feelings about being part of his family, keeping that connection private.
Pete Calvin, a friend and former teammate of Kayce’s from the Navy SEALs, pointed out to Kayce that he’d never revealed his wealthy background, mentioning he was like a ‘Montana Rockefeller,’ as reported by People magazine.
‘That was the best part about being a SEAL. Being a Dutton didn’t matter,’ Kayce replied.
John was also brought up during a conversation between Kayce and his son Tate, according to People.
Kayce explained to his son that the East Camp ranch was all he had to give, and that’s why he was so determined to hold onto it.
‘But what if I’m not sure I want it?’ Tate asks.
You know, my grandfather always said someone would come along and put me in a tough spot – a decision that would impact not just their life, but mine too. It’s funny how right he was. It feels like this moment is exactly what he predicted – being forced to choose a path that changes everything for both of us.
‘I want you to forge your own path — this camp is your home, it’s not your destiny,’ Kayce adds.
I’ve faced unimaginable loss – my friends, family, even my wife – but I’m still here. If I become your enemy, though, that will finally be my breaking point.
Kevin Costner left the show Yellowstone after filming the first part of its fifth season, and reports surfaced suggesting a disagreement with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan.
He apparently left the show because filming his Western movie, Horizon – which he directed, starred in, and co-wrote – clashed with the show’s schedule.
Horizon, a film Costner has been working on for years and personally funded to the tune of over $38 million, released its first installment last year, but it didn’t perform well at the box office.
The spinoff, debuted on March 1, is centered around an elite team of US Marshals in Montana.
This tough group takes on gang members, the cartels and even Grizzly bears.
Gil Birmingham is returning as Broken Rock Reservation chief Thomas Rainwater.
In a preview of the show, he tells Kayce that the Dutton family has a violent nature, but Kayce is an exception – he’s someone who naturally defends others.
The show also brings back Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.
Ash Santos, known for her role in American Horror Story, Tatanka Means from Killers of the Flower Moon, and Arielle Kebbel, who starred in The Vampire Diaries, have also joined the cast.
They’re becoming main cast members on the show, playing Kayce’s colleagues on the US Marshals team – their characters are named Andrea, Miles, and Belle.
Brett Cullen, known for playing Thomas Wayne in the movie Joker, will be appearing in a recurring role as Harry Gifford, the head of the US Marshals in Montana.
The series ‘Marshals: A Yellowstone Story’ will include Logan Marshall-Green, who was previously confirmed to play Pete Calvin, a friend of Kayce from their time in the military.
The show centers on Kayce as he tries to establish justice in Montana. He and his team face the challenge of juggling their personal lives, their responsibilities, and the emotional toll of being the last protectors against rising violence in the area.
Luke Grimes played Kayce Dutton, a member of the central ranching family, in all five seasons of the popular show Yellowstone.
