Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5
One of the most shocking deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was when Foggy Nelson died in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. While he surprisingly reappeared in a recent episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, I believe Matt Murdock’s friend may play an even more significant role in the upcoming third season.
Vanessa Fisk planned the murder of Foggy Nelson, and Bullseye carried it out. This event deeply affected the first season of Born Again, leading Daredevil (Matt Murdock) to temporarily retire after he almost killed Bullseye in a fit of rage. However, characters rarely stay dead in comic books.
The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again (season 2, episode 5) featured Elden Henson’s character, Foggy Nelson, in flashback scenes. I think this could hint at a real return for Foggy – possibly even a resurrection – in season 3, based on recent clues from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, past comic books, and some hints that have been dropped.
Daredevil: Born Again Season More Than Justifies Foggy Nelson’s. MCU Return (Despite His S1 Death)
Although Foggy Nelson won’t be appearing on screen in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, his impact on the story is still significant.
Okay, so in Season 2, Episode 5 of Born Again, they brought Foggy Nelson back in a really moving way. They showed flashbacks to right before the first season of the Netflix Daredevil series. It turns out Foggy was going all out to help a client – and it was extra complicated because the guy was the older brother of someone who used to bully Foggy when they were kids. It added a lot of emotional weight to the scene, seeing him fight for this guy despite their history.
Instead of staying angry, Foggy responds with kindness and forgiveness, freeing the man after finding a mistake in the documents and even giving him money to start over. Matt doesn’t immediately understand, but Foggy’s actions eventually inspire him. This idea echoes in the present day when Daredevil chooses to help an injured Bullseye, even though Bullseye has caused him immense pain, including the death of Foggy.
The show’s decision to focus on compassion highlights how Matt’s relationship with Foggy continues to deeply influence his work as Daredevil, alongside his beliefs. Because of this, the flashbacks featuring Foggy in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again felt meaningful and integral to the story, rather than simply existing to please fans.
I’m really hoping Foggy Nelson plays a significant role in season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again, and I think there are good reasons to believe he will.
Why I Think Foggy Nelson Could Return For Real In Daredevil: Born Again Season 3
In the comics, Foggy Nelson wasn’t actually killed, despite it appearing that way – it was a deception orchestrated by Vanessa Fisk on her deathbed. He was secretly put into witness protection, and a similar plot twist could happen in the Disney+ series Born Again. With Vanessa Fisk now also deceased in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the possibility of Foggy faking his death feels even more likely.
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day revealed that The Hand, a dangerous ninja group, will be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, in the comics, Foggy Nelson’s return happened while Daredevil was fighting The Hand. Plus, The Hand is known for its ability to bring people back to life using mystical powers.
Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage, recently shared photos from the set of Daredevil: Born Again season 3 showing him with Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock). Both actors were wearing orange outfits that look like prison clothes, hinting that Daredevil might be arrested during the season. This storyline would be similar to the comic books, where Foggy Nelson helped clear Matt Murdock’s name and get him released from prison.
After the latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again, I’m even more eager to see Foggy Nelson return. I’m going to keep hoping for it until season 3 arrives, and I won’t give up on that possibility.
Marvel Studios will release new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season two every Tuesday night on Disney+.
