After a long break, season 8 of FBI is back, and it’s finally exploring the relationship between Nina and Scola – a storyline that FBI: Most Wanted never fully developed. Actress Shantel VanSanten is thrilled about this. The new season, which airs on Monday nights (making FBI the only show in the FBI franchise not on NBC), begins the second half of its run with a special episode. CBS’s 2025-2026 television season is now fully underway.
As the new season of FBI approaches, CBS has begun promoting what viewers can expect. The show has already seen a lot this year – Isobel’s return, the arrival of Eva Ramos, and the shocking loss of Dani Rhodes. When the show returns in 2026, Nina will be back for an exciting mission, culminating in a heartwarming celebration.
Shantel VanSanten recently spoke with ScreenRant about the decision to have her characters, Scola and Nina from FBI, get married in season 8. Nina had previously been against marriage, feeling content with her relationship with Scola as it was. Something shifted between the end of FBI: Most Wanted and the current season, leading to their wedding on FBI. Here’s what VanSanten had to say:
ScreenRant asked about Nina’s decision to not get married after the end of FBI: Most Wanted. They wanted to know my initial reaction to that storyline and if I had any hesitation about playing it.
Shantel VanSanten shared that she was really disappointed when Most Wanted ended. She enjoyed playing her character and the show’s dynamic, especially the feeling of camaraderie with her co-stars. She was particularly upset that her character’s storyline with another character felt unfinished and hoped it wasn’t truly over, admitting she wasn’t ready to say goodbye.
I received a call asking if I’d return for a special episode. I asked what it was about, and they told me Nina was getting married. I was shocked! I couldn’t believe it – I thought, ‘Why would Nina be getting married? And why are we doing a wedding? That’s not something this show does!’

Although Julianne VanSanten was initially unsure about appearing in the FBI episode “Confetti” (season 8, episode 11), she was excited by the opportunity to work alongside Missy Peregrym, who plays Maggie. Ultimately, she became a fan of the idea of her characters, Nina and Scola, getting married because the writers emphasized the strong connection that led to their decision.
It was really enjoyable to finally collaborate with Missy and watch Maggie and Nina team up – it felt like something I’d been hoping for a long time! Seeing Nina in her element at work while undercover was a highlight. I think being a partner and a mom is tough, and she might feel like she’s not excelling at everything because she’s balancing so much.
I was completely supportive because I understood why they wanted to get married, and I liked that the focus wouldn’t be on a big wedding, but on their commitment to each other. We’d already navigated challenges and taken risks together so many times – always moving forward despite uncertainty. Their lives were already full of complexity and required constant compromise, so the wedding felt like a celebratory bonus.
The season finale of FBI: Most Wanted, featuring Nina and Scola’s wedding, could have been a good ending for the team. However, it would have felt wrong, as Scola’s father was heavily pressuring Nina to marry him despite her reservations. Ultimately, CBS chose to celebrate the finale with Remy’s retirement and Barnes’ well-deserved promotion instead.
It’s been almost a year since Kellan VanSanten finished playing Nina on FBI: Most Wanted, and now she can look back on Nina’s decision with some distance. She clarifies that her commitment to Scola goes beyond just their legal agreement—it’s a true connection between them. After everything the team has been through on FBI, their wedding feels like a genuinely happy moment to celebrate.
