Chelsea is known for a luxurious lifestyle – think champagne, high-end nightclubs, and mingling with wealthy and aristocratic people. The area and its residents have become symbols of this glamorous image.
But awkwardly for Ollie and Gareth Locke, it is no longer where they call home.
The couple from the reality show Made In Chelsea have moved to a new home in a quiet, upscale area of southwest London. This comes after they had to leave their previous townhouse due to a rent dispute, leaving a £45,000 bill outstanding.
Located on a quiet, tree-lined street just a short distance from Barnes Green – complete with a village pond, church, and a popular bakery – this property offers a comparable lifestyle and value to their previous apartment in Chelsea.
Tanya De Jager, a Dutch businesswoman, purchased the property in 1989. It’s currently unknown if she has any connection to the Locke family.
It’s clear that the couple haven’t been negatively affected by everything that happened – in fact, they’ve actually come out of it in a good position.
According to a former friend, it’s baffling how this couple manages. They reportedly don’t pay their rent, yet they’ve somehow found a lovely new place to live.
While the home is beautiful, it is a world away from the high-octane swirl of Chelsea.
This beautiful five-bedroom, three-bathroom house is located on a peaceful and upscale street. It’s built of red brick with attractive stone details and impressive pillars topped with lion statues.
The house looks like the others on the street, except the people who live there really value their privacy. They keep all the blinds closed, have an electric gate, and a lot of security cameras pointed at the road.
Rumours of the couple’s arrival are already spreading among families.
I’d heard about the issue with the unpaid rent,” a mother shared with me while on Barnes Green. “We’ve heard they’re somewhere nearby, but I’m here with my young child most days and haven’t spotted them. Everyone around here knows each other, so I guess they’re keeping to themselves.”
Barnes is often called a ‘village within a city’ because it offers lovely walks along the river, beautiful 19th-century houses, and a strong sense of community.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! Binky Felstead, like, the Binky from Made In Chelsea, lives just around the corner from Ollie! I nearly fainted when I found out. It’s amazing to think they’ve been friends for ages and she’s practically his neighbor! I’m obsessed with both of them, honestly!
Like others, she’s recently faced criticism after businesses revealed she asked for free products or services in return for positive reviews on her social media.
Binky, a 35-year-old mother of three, faced criticism after people discovered she was selling her worn clothes online for surprisingly high prices.
Ollie and Gareth have more to be embarrassed about than Binky, however. The Daily Mail reported earlier this year that they owed £25,000 in unpaid rent for their previous four-bedroom house near King’s Road in Chelsea – covering a period of three months.
After the couple failed to pay, the debt grew to £45,000 with the addition of late fees and legal expenses, eventually leading to them being forced to leave their home to avoid eviction.
Adding to their difficulties, the couple had a tenant living with them who paid rent directly to them during her time there.
She initially thought the money was going to their landlord, but later found out that wasn’t true. She alleges the funds were actually used to support the couple’s expensive way of life.
Gareth stated that a fourth tenant had initially agreed to contribute to the bills but didn’t pay their share and left without doing so – something the others deny.
Now, she’s responsible for the unpaid rent and bills, and debt collectors are trying to recover the money from her.
Gareth, who started on the show Made In Chelsea with original cast member Ollie in 2018, told the Daily Mail that he and Ollie plan to pay back the money they owe. He emphasized that they are a typical family who, like everyone else, carefully manage their finances to support their two-year-old twins, Apollo and Cosima.
He pointed out that almost everyone struggles with money at some point, whether it’s a late credit card payment or trouble paying rent.
Most couples in their situation would likely have to move to a smaller home, but Ollie and Gareth are bucking that trend.
‘Our rent for the next house is pretty much the same,’ Gareth said.
Given the couple’s history of lavish spending, that should not come as a surprise.
The couple became famous for showcasing a luxurious lifestyle on the show – constantly traveling, staying in beautiful estates, and enjoying champagne.
As a frequent traveler, I’ve seen it all, and let me tell you, Ollie was incredibly proud of how well-traveled his pups, Apollo and Cosima, already were! He often mentioned they’d racked up dozens of flights – and weren’t just crammed into economy! We’re talking business class and even private jets for these pampered pooches.
He explained they’ve flown private jets and business class, but a single experience in economy was so bad they’ll never repeat it. “Let’s just say we won’t be doing that again,” he added.
It’s unclear if they’ll be able to maintain their lavish lifestyle. Since 2017, Ollie has closed four businesses – including Chelsea Pub Company and Chelsea Harbour Wine – but continues to run his performing arts company, Laughing London Limited.
He used to have around £122,000 in business funds, but things have changed dramatically. Now, he only has £109 left and owes the company £144,000.
The latest accounts are also two years overdue.
Alongside a £40,000 bank loan, Ollie’s company owes creditors £126,119.
Despite everything, Ollie hasn’t been deterred. I recently learned he’s been telling people at parties that he’s planning to launch a new nightclub in a posh area of west London, partnering with nightlife entrepreneur Marc Jacques Burton.
Burton, however, insisted he knew nothing about it.
Back on the Green, the mother I spoke to earlier offers a final observation.
‘It’s a lovely place to live,’ she says. ‘But people do notice things.’
Ollie used to be the face of Chelsea’s lavish lifestyle, but stepping away from the spotlight is proving more difficult for him than he anticipated.
