House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 recap and review: The Sowing of the Seeds is the show's most epic moment

As a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, I have eagerly anticipated HBO’s adaptation of the story, “House of the Dragon.” After watching episode 1, I am utterly captivated.

The second year of “House of the Dragon” on HBO has been impressive thus far, even with some sluggish moments. This is due to the aftermath of Aegon Targaryen seizing the crown from his sister Rhaenyra Targaryen. The highly anticipated “Sowing of the Seeds” scene from “Fire & Blood” was unveiled in the latest episode, leaving me exhilarated and content. I’m still apprehensive about the season finale, but less anxious following tonight’s viewing.

WARNING: Major spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 are below.

In tonight’s latest episode, there are some brief moments that provide amusing distractions but aren’t essential during this pivotal point in the season. However, the compelling parts are truly captivating. Right after episode 6, I find myself drawn back into the story as Rhaenyra and Syrax come face-to-face with Addam of Hull. He’s now in possession of Seasmoke, leaving me curious about his background, how he obtained a dragon, and what his intentions are.

In the bustling city of King’s Landing, Alicent finds herself in a deep sadness, confiding in the grandmaester about her current predicament. Though she had always been devoted to her duties, she now feels discarded and unhappy, a feeling that deeply troubles her. If only she had supported Rhaenyra’s claims, she might have been received more favorably! Yet, Alicent ponders this thought idly. One of her guards overhears her longing to escape the city and venture into the serene Kingswood forest.

Targaryen bastards are coming

Lord Jasper shares with Larys that there have been whispers in the castle about Seasmoke having a new rider, whom he assumes is Rhaena. Skeptical of this news since Rhaena hasn’t mounted a dragon yet, Larys appears unconvinced and chooses not to inform Aemond about the supposed sighting just yet.

Rhaenyra goes back to Dragonstone, leaving her council perplexed by recent events. She shares her concerns with Mysaria, suggesting that Addam might have Targaryen lineage hidden in his background. Instead of delving into history books, Mysaria advises Rhaenyra to search for bastards with Targaryen blood. Rhaenyra is hesitant but Mysaria makes a compelling argument: not all individuals of high birth can be trusted, as her own half-brothers have proven through their betrayals. “Let’s rally the forces of these potential Targaryen descendants,” Rhaenyra decides.

Movement in the Riverlands

Lord Oscar Tully gathers the Riverlords for a meeting with Oscar and Daemon, and to my surprise, this segment proves quite enjoyable in “House of the Dragon” season 2. Admittedly, I’ve grown weary of Daemon’s storyline in Harrenhal, but this particular episode scene keeps my interest captivated.

After the passing of his grandfather, Oscar has inherited the title of Lord of Riverrun. However, due to his youth, he’s unsure if the other lords will give him the respect he deserves. To address this, Oscar meets with the Riverlords and pledges to uphold honor in all his actions. Although he may not hold a personal fondness for Daemon, he remains loyal to Viserys Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen. He urges everyone to follow suit.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: To gain the Riverlords’ trust fully, Oscar and I (Daemon) have some chores. We need to make an example of Willem Blackwood for his misdeeds. When he learns of this, Willem argues that he was just obeying my orders. But I, Oscar, am convinced it was his own hatred towards the Brackens driving him. With a heavy heart, I order the deed to be done. The expression on Daemon’s face turns grim before he draws his sword and ends Willem’s life.

At the castle once more, Daemon experiences yet another vision of Viserys (yawn, repetitive). Frankly, I’d suggest skipping this scene. The dialogue between them is overly obvious: Viserys inquires if Daemon still covets the crown. We’ve already grasped that concept.

In other parts of the same episode, Aegon is continuing his healing journey in King’s Landing, but Larys urges him to make more progress. Alicent is pondering her next move as she prepares to depart from the Vale and head to Pentos. Meanwhile, Rhaena rushes out into the open fields in search of the wild dragon. Additionally, Corlys engages in separate conversations with Addam and Alyn of Hull at various points.

Jacaerys needs an explanation

Jace visits his mother in anger after a commoner declared ownership of a dragon. He’s concerned since he now doubts that only those of noble birth can claim dragons. Rhaenyra feels compelled to involve bastards, but Jace strongly disapproves. He wonders aloud if she had known he would be born with brown hair when she began her relationship with Harwin, a fact he’s carried with him throughout his life. As a legitimate heir with a dragon, Jace could make a case for his claim, but now that anyone can do it, he feels uneasy about his position. When Rhaenyra passes away, will Jace still be the rightful contender for the Iron Throne?

In this passage, Rhaenyra consoles Jace and acknowledges the necessity of her actions towards him. I find this interaction between Jace and Rhaenyra intriguing; although I would have preferred a more substantial role for Jace, as seen in “Fire & Blood,” I appreciate how he reveals his deepest insecurities in this scene. The topic of Harwin or Jace’s bastard status is never brought up between them, indicating that it remains a significant concern for Jace in his thoughts.

Hugh comes clean

I, as an avid fan, would recount the story as follows: I’ve heard Rhaenyra summoning dragonriders through the realm, with Mysaria bringing word to King’s Landing. At a local tavern in the city, Ulf’s companions share rumors that Rhaenyra is searching for Targaryen bastards, but Ulf seems reluctant. He expresses uncertainty about his own lineage, perhaps just out of fear. However, an intriguing detail has emerged: Hugh, despite his wife’s opposition, feels compelled to join the quest. He confesses that he carries Targaryen blood within him, something he had kept hidden to shield his loved ones. This revelation is particularly captivating because it isn’t mentioned in “Fire & Blood.” His mother, a woman of humble origins, worked in a pleasure house. Many fans speculate she could be Saera Targaryen, one of Jaehaerys I and Alysanne’s children who, after a scandal, ended up working in Essos’ pleasure houses.

Kat still doesn’t want Hugh to go, but he knows he must.

In the last quarter of the episode, the dragon keepers are strongly displeased with Rhaenyra’s plan and consider it disrespectful towards the holy dragons. Consequently, they decline to assist her. Nevertheless, Rhaenyra addresses the commoners who have gathered, acknowledging their sacrifices and potential risks. She asserts that their objective is noble: bringing an end to the suffering of the realm and ushering in peace. Afterward, Rhaenyra summons Vermithor and steps aside to observe who amongst them could win his allegiance.

An epic fight for survival

In an exhilarating turn of events reminiscent of “The Hunger Games,” Vermithor unleashes a torrent of dragonfire, scattering the crowd in panic. The lucky ones scatter and scramble for cover or a means of escape, while others bravely face their fearsome foe. Hugh manages to approach Vermithor, who yields to his presence. Rhaenyra looks on approvingly as this thrilling scene unfolds, adding a touch of magical realism to the series that we’ve yet to experience. Elsewhere, Ulf finds himself alone and lost in thought, only to be taken aback when Silverwing approaches him, allowing for an unexpected bonding moment.

At King’s Landing, during a council meeting with Aemond, there’s a brief reference to Daeron and his flying dragon. Suddenly, they are interrupted by loud shouts outside. People cry out “dragon!” and Aemond rushes to the doors to see one soaring in the heavens. He swiftly mounts a horse and rides after it, soon discovering Ulf on Silverwing. Following him, Aemond heads for Dragonstone. However, upon seeing multiple dragons, he realizes the danger and returns home with Vhagar.
