House of Spoils and its unique ending, explained

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that “House of Spoils” was a unique blend of supernatural elements and culinary drama that kept me hooked till the very end.

In the recently released movie “House of Spoils,” produced by Blumhouse, the conclusion unfolds rather unremarkably. Throughout the film, we follow Ariana DeBose’s character, Chef, as she perfects her new restaurant and explores the world of its previous owner through the untamed garden at the back. However, an unexpected twist occurs when Chef is forcefully evicted from her own restaurant, leaving her to struggle and fight for her rightful place back in the kitchen.

After the disastrous gathering with friends and family, I can’t help but feel the weight of expectation as an investor expresses concern that I might be losing my grip, much like my predecessor who became so entangled in the eerie atmosphere of this place that he ended up a wandering soul living in the forest, reduced to chewing on his own fingers.

In response, Andre pushes Chef out of her kitchen, shuts her in the wine cellar, and ultimately hands over the evening to Lucia (Barbie Ferreira). Escaping from the cellar after communicating with the previous homeowner’s spirit (and deceased corpse), Chef emerges under the moonlight, slaughters a rabbit, and presents a grand spectacle by preparing the “authentic” dinner outdoors. The meal, much to the dismayed diners’ delight, turns out to be a hit.

What causes Chef’s transformation in the end of the movie?

In the cellar, the Chef is stranded with only her own hands and the spectral figure of the former proprietor, desperate to exit the cellar and resume her culinary duties. When she descends into a tunnel carved by hand, she encounters a deceased woman. As memories flood back, we discover that this woman, once branded as a witch and subjected to public scorn, was actually providing aid to those in distress through the use of various herbs and ointments.

Perhaps she was perceived as a witch, yet her craft wasn’t malevolent. Through gathering produce from her garden and venturing into this woman’s home, Chef established a bond, which tormented Magnus but fueled Chef’s growth once she discerned the truth. People often harbor fear towards the unfamiliar. The ensuing scene, where Chef digs herself out of the ground, is striking, as she appears to be sprouting from the soil much like something nurtured in the earth. She emerges revitalized and self-assured about her future actions. This is when she slays a rabbit with her bare hands.

The Chef’s act of preparing a meal outdoors in nature resonates with those who appreciate her work, much like the contrast between her acceptance and the rejection faced by the previous woman attempting something similar. In this scenario, the Chef serves as a bridge connecting two strong women across generations, a role that Magnus, unfortunately, could not fulfill.

In a surprising twist for a supernatural horror film titled “House of Spoils,” the ending carries an unexpected sense of optimism. The fate of the character Chef remains uncertain, but it appears that Andres deeply regrets confining her in the cellar and both the visiting investor, Toli, and Chef’s previous employer, Marcello, were positively impressed with her culinary skills.

House of Spoils is now streaming on Amazon.
