Honkai: Star Rail’s Version 4.0 update introduces Yao Guang, a new 5-star character who specializes in supporting the team with Physical damage boosts. This guide will show you how to build Yao Guang to get the most out of her abilities, with a detailed look at her skills and recommended settings to improve her performance.
Elation Mechanisms and Yao Guang Gameplay
Okay, so if you want to get Yao Guang, you need to understand the New Elation Path first. Basically, Elation is a mechanic, and here’s the lowdown on how it works…
Elation Mechanisms
When you include an Elation character in your team, you’ll see mask icons with numbers appear when combat starts. These icons show up on the skill bar, action bar, and next to each Elation character’s health. Elation characters have the ability to deal additional damage, and the action bar indicates when this extra damage – called Aha Instant – will occur.
Aha Instant can only be activated by Elation characters. Currently, we can’t increase its power using a character’s HP, attack, defense, or damage bonus until characters can convert those stats into Elation stats. The mask icons you see always show a number, which determines how much damage Aha Instant does. These numbers are called Punchline values, and higher numbers result in greater damage.
Each character in Elation has a special ability that can either help allies or harm enemies. These abilities are used in a specific order determined by each character’s ID, which you can see by tapping on their ability icon.
When characters use their Elation Skill, the numbers showing progress on their skill and action bars reset to the beginning. However, the numbers on each Elation character’s health bar increase. As an Elation character’s health bar numbers go up, they enter a state called Certified Banger, which gives them a boost. This boost lasts for two turns and can be applied multiple times, with each instance lasting independently.
Yao Guang Gameplay
Her main ability is creating a Zone that boosts her teammates’ Elation, which sets up powerful attack opportunities called Aha Instants and increases their ability to break through enemy defenses. Her ultimate ability, Aha, gives the whole team an extra turn and further enhances their ability to bypass enemy resistances. Below is a detailed look at her skills, techniques, ultimate, talents, Elation skill, and passive abilities.
Skill
Her ability creates a zone that lasts 3 turns, boosting the Elation damage of all allies by 20% – the amount is based on her own Elation stat. Elation is a brand-new stat that can’t be increased with Relics or Ornaments. Additionally, using her normal attack or skill while the zone is active grants her 3 Punchline.
Technique
Using this technique will instantly activate her special ability at the beginning of each fight, and it won’t cost any resources to do so.
Ultimate
Using Ultimate immediately grants you 5 Punchline and boosts your allies’ resistance penetration to all damage types by 20% for 3 rounds. It also triggers an Aha Instant dealing 20 damage, but doesn’t affect your current Punchline total.
Talent
Okay, so playing Yao Guang, if I get the Certified Banger buff, things get really fun. Basically, whenever my teammates attack, we can unleash some serious coordinated Elation damage. And here’s the kicker – if they use skill points while attacking, Yao Guang deals even more damage! It’s like a team-play reward system, and it feels awesome when it all clicks.
Elation Skill
Okay, so this move is pretty awesome. It hits all the enemies with a debuff that lasts for three turns, making them take 16% more damage from everything. Plus, it does a solid chunk of physical damage to everyone right away. Then, it randomly picks one enemy and really focuses on them, hitting them five times with physical damage – each hit is 20% of their max health. It’s a great way to quickly take out a key target while softening up the rest of the group.
Passive Skills
- Amaze in Grace: If Yao Guang has 120 SPD, then her Elation increases by 30%. For every 1 SPD she has after reaching 120 SPD, her Elation increases by +1 up to 320 SPD. Her main stat Priority is SPD.
- Poised and Stated: Increase her Crit Damage by 60% after using her Elation skill.
- Felicity Ensemble: When Yap Guang gets Certified Banger, its duration increases by 1 round.

Best Team Comps for Yao Guang in Honkai: Star Rail
Yao Guang excels in teams built around the ‘Elation’ mechanic. Her abilities are specifically made to boost characters who focus on Elation damage, using strategic Zone placement, creating ‘Punchline’ effects, and triggering ‘Aha’ Instants.
Sparxie/Yao Guang/Sparkle/Dan Heng Permansor Terrae
This is the strongest team composition for her in Honkai: Star Rail. To maximize her abilities, it’s best to pair her with another character who provides the Elation buff. Currently, Sparxie is the only character available who can do this, and she’ll become available later in version 4.0.
Sparxie is the primary damage dealer on this team. During her ‘Aha Instant’ ability, she rapidly attacks, dealing a lot of fire damage. Yao Guang supports the team by increasing overall damage with her ‘Zone’ ability, building up ‘Punchlines’ through her regular attacks and skills, and then unleashing ‘Aha Instant’ with her Ultimate. She also adds extra damage through her passive ability.
Sparkle acts as our team’s second support, boosting Critical DMG, speeding up actions by 50%, and replenishing 6 Skill Points with her Ultimate. Dan Heng • Imbibitor Lunae handles sustain, providing shields and dealing extra damage through follow-up attacks.
Archer/Yao Guang/Sparkle/Dan Heng Permansor Terrae
This team isn’t specifically built around Elation, but it works well with Yao Guang. Yao Guang, Sparkle, and Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae all fulfill similar roles within the team. Archer acts as the primary damage dealer, relying on Skill Points to maximize his output.
Is Yao Guang worth Pulling in Honkai: Star Rail
She’s a powerful support character, especially for teams built around the ‘Elation’ mechanic. Currently, she excels at boosting ‘Sparxie’ teams, but as more ‘Elation’ characters are released, her value will only grow. If you plan on collecting these new ‘Elation’ characters, she’s an essential addition to your team.
