Hong Kong’s Crypto Leap: Ether ETF Stakes Its Claim!

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has given the green light to the Bosera Hashkey Ether ETF for ethereum staking, a groundbreaking move for the Asia-Pacific region. 🚀

The Bosera Hashkey Virtual Asset Ether ETF (stock codes: 3009.HK/9009.HK), a joint venture between Bosera International and Hashkey Capital, secured regulatory approval on April 11 to stake up to 30% of its ether holdings starting April 25, 2025. This makes it the first virtual asset spot product in the region to earn rewards through ethereum’s proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism. 🎉

Launched in April 2024 as Hong Kong’s first spot ether ETF, the fund initially offered passive exposure to ETH. With the staking upgrade, it can now reinvest rewards—after deducting fees—to boost compound growth potential. Hashkey Cloud will handle staking via its ETF Staking Pro platform, using compliance frameworks and custody solutions from the Hashkey Exchange. 🛠️

BOCI Prudential, the fund’s custodian and administrator, highlighted its role in enhancing Hong Kong’s virtual asset ETF ecosystem. The ETF tracks ether’s price using the CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate – Asia Pacific Variant and trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. 📈

“Getting approval for staking is a major milestone in our commitment to Bosera’s investment philosophy and our exploration of virtual asset opportunities,” said Bosera International CEO Lian Shaodong. Hashkey Capital CEO Deng Chao added that the ETF makes ethereum staking more accessible, encouraging broader participation in decentralized finance (DeFi). 🌐

This development underscores Hong Kong’s ambition to become a global Web3 hub. Regulators have been increasingly supportive of compliant virtual asset products, with this ETF serving as a bridge between traditional finance and blockchain ecosystems. Andrew Law, CEO of BOCI Prudential, pointed out the product’s dual appeal: exposure to ether and staking-derived returns. Analysts predict this could attract institutional investors looking for regulated crypto yield opportunities. 💼
