CinemaCon 2026 attendees got a first look at the highly anticipated reboot on Wednesday.
I’m so excited to see Henry Cavill take on the role of Connor MacLeod! He plays this Scottish swordsman from the 1500s who finds out he can’t die and is stuck fighting other immortals throughout history for some incredible, unknown reward. It’s a role Christopher Lambert made famous back in the original 1986 movie – that film was awesome and had Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart in it too!
I’m so excited about the new ‘Highlander‘ footage Amazon MGM just dropped! It gives us a really great look at Henry Cavill as MacLeod. The preview starts with him walking through a busy club and quickly jumps into an action scene – it feels really gritty and realistic, which is exactly what I was hoping for with this reboot. We also get a glimpse into MacLeod’s backstory; Cavill narrates that he’s been alive since the 1500s, which is a fantastic way to set up his immortal life.
Although the video clip was short, the presentation focused heavily on behind-the-scenes content. It offered a first glimpse of Russell Crowe as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the character originally played by Connery and a crucial mentor to the main character. We also saw a quick shot of Dave Bautista as The Kurgan, the film’s ruthless villain previously played by Clancy Brown, suggesting a significant connection between the two characters.
The trailer showcased the film’s impressive sets, as well as exciting previews of big action scenes featuring dynamic fight choreography that combines sword fighting with modern weaponry. Producers and writers emphasized Henry Cavill’s commitment to the role, explaining he underwent rigorous training with both swords and guns. This dedication is visible in the footage, which highlights a more realistic and physically demanding combat style for his character.
The presentation featured cast members including Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Marisa Abela, Jeremy Irons, and Max Zhang. The preview concluded with the entire cast saying the famous line, “there can be only one,” followed by the Highlander logo.
After the first Highlander movie became popular, the franchise grew to include several sequels, a cartoon series, and novels. However, these later installments didn’t receive great reviews. Henry Cavill’s new reboot aims to revitalize Highlander, and it’s the first time the story of MacLeod will be shown in cinemas since 2000’s Highlander: Endgame.
An official release date for Highlander has not yet been announced.
