The 2026 Met Gala is here, celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new spring exhibit, “Costume Art.” Hosted by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, this year’s gala—the 78th edition—also marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s first permanent space within the museum, the Condé M. Nast Galleries. While last year’s theme looked back at the history of Black fashion through the lens of dandyism, this year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” focuses on how clothing itself can be considered a work of art.
The 2026 Met exhibition is a landmark event, bringing the debate about fashion as art full circle. In 1983, showcasing Yves Saint Laurent’s work sparked controversy – was fashion truly fine art? Now, curator Andrew Bolton isn’t just addressing that question, he’s challenging the very idea of a distinction. The exhibition, titled “Costume Art,” argues that clothing is the most important way we perceive and understand the human body, presenting garments alongside classical sculptures like the 1st-century Diadoumenos to prove its point.
This year’s red carpet is all about looking back at when art and fashion collided. We’re seeing styles inspired by Surrealism, reminiscent of the iconic collaborations between Elsa Schiaparelli and Dalí, and the clever illusion techniques of Jean Paul Gaultier. The event’s hosts also reflect this blend of disciplines: Nicole Kidman embodies the glamour of classic couture, while Venus Williams, a designer herself, highlights the beauty and form of the athletic physique.
Stay tuned for live updates on all the latest news! The “Costume Art” exhibition will be open to the public at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
