The latest expansion for Hearthstone is called Cataclysm. It introduces the legendary character Deathwing, along with two new gameplay elements: the Herald and Shatter keywords.
Blizzard Entertainment has announced Cataclysm, the newest expansion for Hearthstone. The reveal happened during the Hearthstone Spotlight event on February 9th.
Hearthstone Cataclysm release date
The new Cataclysm expansion for Hearthstone launches on March 17th. It brings back the iconic character Deathwing, but with a twist – this version didn’t fall in the original World of Warcraft story! Blizzard explains that Murozond broke the Hourglass of Time, creating a gateway to a timeline where Deathwing survived.
Deathwing enters new Hearthstone expansion
The latest Hearthstone expansion highlights the power of Deathwing with a brand-new hero card featuring him. It also introduces massive ‘Colossal’ minions, along with the ‘Herald’ and ‘Shatter’ keywords to shake up gameplay.
Hearthstone gets Herald keyword
In the Cataclysm expansion, only six classes – Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior – have cards featuring keywords. This is because Deathwing is collaborating with these specific classes, and they are the ones receiving the special ‘Herald’ cards.
- Herald delivers instant value by summoning a Colossal Soldier and keeps scaling in strength throughout the game.
- Playing a Herald minion summons a Soldier that has the same ability as your class Colossal’s appendages.
- Each Herald uses upgrades both the Soldier and your Colossal’s appendages. Herald twice to double their power, four times to double it a final time.
- Herald also empowers Deathwing, Worldbreaker, increasing the number of Cataclysms he unleashes when played. Herald twice to play two Cataclysms, four times to use all four.

Hearthstone gets Shatter keyword
The dragonflights battling Deathwing need assistance from players using the Mage, Priest, Druid, Hunter, and Paladin classes. Each of these classes will receive a powerful, unique Dragon Aspect card, and they’ll also have access to new cards featuring the ‘Shatter’ ability.
- When you draw a card with Shatter, it breaks into two pieces that move to opposite ends of your hand.
- You can play the pieces separately, but if you manage to bring them back together by playing the cards in between, they recombine into a single card that’s doubly strong.
