He-Man creator Roger Sweet dies at 91 after he was forced to create GoFundMe amid health battle

Roger Sweet, the toy designer best known for creating the iconic character He-Man, has died at 91.

According to TMZ, Sweet’s wife, Marlene, reported that he passed away Tuesday morning at a nursing facility after struggling with dementia.

Roger Sweet was a key toy designer at Mattel during the 1970s and 80s. He’s best known for creating the popular action figure He-Man in 1981, and then expanding that character into a full fantasy and science fiction world with the Masters of the Universe toy line, which launched in 1982.

Earlier this year, Sweet and his wife started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the increasing expenses of his medical care after he was diagnosed with dementia.

She shared in February that he had a bad fall during a walk, and doctors discovered two brain bleeds while he was being treated in the intensive care unit.

Marlene informed Roger’s fans that doctors advised him to move into a memory care facility. This move is meant to help manage his dementia and ensure he receives the monitoring and safety he needs.

She shared that Roger is almost 91 and is living with dementia. She explained that his condition has worsened, but she has been dedicated to caring for him at home.

I’ve always been fascinated by the story of how He-Man came to be! It’s incredible to think that he really started because Mattel missed out on making Star Wars toys. They decided not to pursue that license just a year before the first movie came out in 1977, and He-Man was, in a way, their answer to that – a way to create their own hugely popular action figure line.

After the massive success of Star Wars and the continued popularity of its toys, Mattel attempted to compete by creating its own line of action figures based on similar sci-fi themes.

After several unsuccessful attempts at creating popular toys, Sweet finally delivered a hit with He-Man, giving the toy company exactly what they wanted.

Many believe Ralph Sweet first proposed the He-Man character design to Mattel. He thought the strong, muscular figure would be popular with kids, even if they didn’t know anything about his story or the other characters in his world.

There’s been disagreement about how the character was originally developed. Some Mattel designers later said that the initial designs for Sweet were based on fantasy drawings created by Mark Taylor, who worked on packaging for the company.

Before joining Mattel, Sweet worked as a designer at Walter Dorwin Teague Associates, a leading industrial design firm. There, he designed products for well-known companies like Boeing, Hoover, and Procter & Gamble.

Shortly after Sweet transitioned to a full-time care facility, his wife started a GoFundMe campaign.

Marlene wrote that he’s only been there a short time, but his mental health is unfortunately getting worse, and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

His wife, married to him for nearly 40 years, explained that his medical care cost over $10,000 each month, and Medicare didn’t cover these expenses, given his health condition.

I’m asking for help from fellow He-Man fans to cover some unexpected bills. Any contribution, big or small, would be a huge relief.

In her GoFundMe post, she highlighted Sweet’s significant contributions to the toy industry, noting his 15+ years as a toy designer at Mattel.

Roger created the first He-Man character, including the name, and spent years collaborating with other designers to build the characters and playsets that captivated children then and continue to entertain them now.

Before getting sick, Sweet enjoyed meeting fans at various events and conventions.

‘I was able to accompany him to several, and it was fun to see him interacting with HE-MAN fans,’ his wife wrote.

By Tuesday evening, donations had surpassed $93,700, nearly doubling the initial $50,000 target. The Mattel Foundation contributed a generous gift of $5,000.

In the early 1980s, Roger Sweet developed He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This led to a popular animated TV series, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, which ran from 1983 to 1985.

Released in 1985, the film He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword led to the creation of the animated series She-Ra: Princess of Power.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen trends come and go, but some classics always make a comeback! The iconic He-Man and Masters of the Universe toys are getting another modern update – this time as a brand new superhero film called Masters of the Universe. It’s exciting to see these beloved characters reaching a new generation!

Directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, the movie will be released in theaters on June 5th.

I’m so excited about this movie’s cast! We’ve got Camila Mendes, the incredibly talented Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, and even Kristen Wiig all involved – it’s a dream team!

The movie is about a young man who finds out he’s actually a prince from another planet. He has to find a magical sword and go back home to save his kingdom, according to IMDb.

Amazon MGM Studios dropped the first teaser trailer of the project in January.

Dolph Lundgren famously played He-Man in the 1987 movie Masters of the Universe, which also featured Courteney Cox, Frank Langella, and James Tolkan.
