HBO’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller Series Rewrites The Rules Of Murder Mysteries

HBO Max’s new science fiction thriller promises a fresh take on murder mysteries and could even reshape the superhero genre. While it’s the next live-action show in James Gunn’s DC Universe, it’s surprisingly more of a gripping crime thriller centered around a murder mystery than a typical superhero story.

The new show, Lanterns, centers around two Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Unlike typical superhero stories, Lanterns isn’t a far-out science fiction adventure. It’s mostly set on Earth and appears to be more of a murder mystery than a traditional superhero series.

The DCU’s Lanterns Is A Murder Mystery With A Sci-Fi Twist

When the series Lanterns was initially announced, James Gunn compared it to the HBO show True Detective. The first trailer seemed to confirm this, suggesting Lanterns would be a more realistic and down-to-earth story than many viewers anticipated. The show’s description also revealed that Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be investigating a murder in a rural part of America, focusing on a gritty, real-world mystery.

Unlike most murder mysteries, Lanterns has a science fiction element. The show’s investigators aren’t ordinary detectives; they’re intergalactic law enforcers who use powerful rings to create anything they imagine from energy and green light. While inspired by shows like True Detective, Lanterns offers something completely different – its characters can fly and build objects with their rings, abilities Rust and Marty definitely didn’t have.

The main mystery in the upcoming ‘Lanterns’ series will probably have a science fiction element. Given that Hal and John are investigating, it’s unlikely to be a simple murder case. It could be a larger conspiracy they’re uniquely positioned to solve, or it might involve alien forces. Even though the Green Lanterns might not be traveling to space, that doesn’t rule out aliens coming to Earth.

It’s hard to predict what Lanterns will be like, especially with its science fiction twist, and that’s what makes it so exciting. The characters, Hal and John, operate outside of everyday human limitations, possessing knowledge of numerous species and planets. This means the killer could be absolutely anyone – a person, or even a being from another world. In Lanterns, anything is possible, and it has the potential to completely redefine the murder mystery genre.

Green Lantern Was A Divisive Choice For A Grounded Murder Mystery

While it’s exciting to see the world of Lanterns tackle a murder mystery with a sci-fi twist, it’s surprising James Gunn chose Green Lantern for a show reminiscent of True Detective. Green Lantern is usually known for far-out science fiction – space travel, aliens, and saving Earth from cosmic dangers. But Lanterns seems to be moving away from all that, aiming for a more down-to-earth and realistic story.

The creative choices in the new Green Lantern series are a bit unexpected, and have sparked a lot of debate among fans. Even writer Grant Morrison has expressed concerns about the show’s darker, more realistic approach. Specifically, viewers have criticized the show’s drab color scheme, and the fact that it largely avoids the space adventures and alien worlds typically associated with Green Lantern. Many were hoping for a grand space opera, and this series isn’t quite meeting those expectations.

One reason a dark, detective show didn’t quite fit Green Lantern is that DC Comics already has a better character for the job: The Question. He’s naturally suited to a mystery series – he’s a detective without the galactic responsibilities of Green Lantern, and James Gunn has a knack for highlighting lesser-known heroes. Plus, being a DC character, The Question could still offer the same kind of science fiction elements as a Green Lantern show.

It’s unexpected to see Green Lantern in a murder mystery, but I still think Lanterns will be great. The idea of a sci-fi twist allowing for anything to happen in a murder mystery is really compelling. Plus, I have faith in Chris Lundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King to do the character well. Despite some debate around it, Lanterns promises to be an exciting series.
