Although many weren’t excited when Warner Bros. announced another adaptation in April 2023, despite the franchise’s popularity, the new project, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, shows that people are still interested.
This Christmas, HBO will debut a fresh take on the Harry Potter story. Following the initial preview, HBO announced a documentary offering a look behind the scenes of the new series. The show quickly gained popularity and is now ranked as the most-watched title globally, according to FlixPatrol.
Harry Potter’s New Special Proves the Franchise Is Still Magical
The 30-minute documentary, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, launched on HBO and HBO Max on April 5th and quickly became a hit. Although it initially appeared at number two worldwide due to delayed chart updates, it actually achieved the top spot in 10 countries on its first day. Viewership more than doubled on the second day, making it the number one title in 24 countries.
The new documentary opened at number four in the U.S. box office. The animated film Hop from 2011 is currently number one, having overtaken the John Wick spin-off Ballerina. The Mummy is a close third.
The documentary is divided into sections and gives viewers a look at the ambitious new HBO series. The first part focuses on how the actors for the main characters – Harry, Hermione, and Ron – were chosen. The casting director shares that they reviewed over 40,000 auditions before finally deciding on Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout for the roles.
The docuseries includes interviews with key cast members like John Lithgow (as Professor Albus Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (Professor Minerva McGonagall), and Paapa Essiedu (Professor Severus Snape). Nick Frost, who is taking on the role of Hagrid, provides narration for the episode.
The Harry Potter Documentary Confirms Season 1’s Episode Count
Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic also offers a sneak peek at the updated Wizarding World. Filmed at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden studio in the UK – the same location as the original eight films – the new series will showcase fresh sets and props. Expect costumes reflecting the 1990s setting, brighter robes for Albus Dumbledore, and incredibly detailed designs and items.
The documentary highlights how meaningful the Harry Potter franchise has been for many people involved. Several leaders from different departments shared their deep personal connection to the series, extending beyond just the books or films – it’s a family affair for some. Many crew members either previously worked on the original eight Harry Potter movies, or are now continuing a family tradition, with their parents having been involved before. Despite its short length, the documentary clearly demonstrates the worldwide love for Harry Potter, and the passion and commitment of those who helped bring it to life.
I’m so excited about the new Harry Potter series! I always felt the movies, while amazing, tried to cram so much from J.K. Rowling’s seven books – and those eight films! – into a reasonable time, and things inevitably had to be left out. That’s why I’m really hoping a TV show will finally give the story the depth it deserves. It’s a little surprising, though, that the first season, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is only going to be eight episodes. I was hoping for more time to really explore everything!
With each episode lasting an hour, the new series will be significantly shorter than the original, which ran for 2 hours and 32 minutes. This shorter length might not be enough to fully draw in new viewers to the world of Harry Potter, and some episodes could feel hurried. Despite controversies surrounding the creator’s views on transgender issues and the casting of Severus Snape, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic demonstrates continued strong interest in the franchise and offers a glimpse of how the show might perform, eight months before it premieres.
You can now watch Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic on HBO Max. The Harry Potter movies will also be available starting Christmas.
