Flight Of The Conchords Is A Dose Of Late 2000s Nostalgia
Despite lasting just two seasons on HBO from 2007 to 2009, Flight of the Conchords is considered a landmark comedy of the late 2000s. The show follows Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, a New Zealand musical duo, as they try to find success as a band in New York City, but their own quirks and lack of motivation often get in the way.
Every episode included at least one song, and the show had a homemade, creative look that was unusual for television back then. The characters’ easygoing attitude captured the hopeful, relaxed spirit of the late 2000s, and the show embraced the trendy, independent style seen in many indie films. The storylines, which were often silly, were partially made up on the spot, adding to the show’s casual and carefree vibe.
Flight of the Conchords created many hilarious moments that became popular online, especially on early platforms like YouTube. Songs such as “Business Time” gained a life of their own outside of the show, which was unusual for the time. This all makes the series a special look back at the late 2000s.
Why Flight Of The Conchords Ended After Season 2
Even though Flight of the Conchords received great reviews and was popular with viewers, HBO cancelled it after just two seasons. Surprisingly, the decision wasn’t made by the network, but by the show’s creators. They found it too demanding to both write the episodes and create all the original songs for each one.
Both McKenzie and Clement lived in New Zealand, which meant they had to move to New York temporarily to film the show. It’s not known if the production difficulties could have been avoided with a different approach or a more relaxed timeline. However, Flight of the Conchords finished well and didn’t overstay its welcome, unlike some other series.
Following the conclusion of their HBO show, Flight of the Conchords released a new album and performed together again in a 2018 special. While both members are currently focused on individual projects, a complete band reunion doesn’t seem likely.
